INBC: Time to pick books

If you have any books you would like to suggest for the September, October, November book club meetings, please post them now. They are more likely to be selected if they're available on the kindle. I think we'll try to meet the last Sunday of September, unless there are objections.

Pineapples: I know you mentioned one at some point, I don't have that information... do you want to put it on the list?

Re: INBC: Time to pick books

  • Have you guys done Shanghai Girls or the sequel Dreams of Joy? I just read them both and they are two of the best books I have ever read.

  • I love Lisa See. We haven't done those books, but I have read them and I think they would be fun to discuss.
  • I was surprised at how much I loved both of those books!

  • I really loved Dreams of Joy. For some reason, I didn't care for Shanghai Girls as much when I was reading it, but looking back on it, I have no idea why I felt that way. Maybe on it's own it wasn't as good as the two of them together.

Have you read anything else by Lisa See? (I'll probably not be able to reply today, but I'll be back tomorrow to read if you respond.)

  • I haven't - what would you suggest?

I understand what you mean, I think it was the two of them together I loved so much. Shanghai Girls ended pretty abruptly.

  • I just finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and thought it was excellent.  Also, I've heard The Girls of Ames is good.  Shanghai Girls was on the list of maybe books a while back so I'd be interested in reading it.

  • I haven't read anything that has been suggested here.  I'm kinda in a book slump at the moment with little inspiration, so I'm up for whatever anybody suggests!

  • I'm also in a slump, and I also just read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.

As for other Lisa See books, I enjoyed Peony In Love, but it made me really mad. I almost didn't finish reading it, but it was the only book I brought with me on vacation. The part that made me mad was in the back of the book description, but I still didn't want it to happen. Also, Snowflower & the Secret Fan is going to be coming out as a movie soon. They're both great books.

I think she also has a mystery series, but I haven't read any of those.

  • What about the one where the guy sets out to read the entire Encyclopedia Britanica. My mom and BIL were reading it this summer and said it was an interesting and fast read.
