WWYD: Turn in Neighbors or not?
The house across from us is a rental (I mentioned on here before how the house was a mystery to me. No one ever there, a different BMW always in the driveway). Anyway, turns out those were renters who moved out in June. Immediately they had a paint crew come to paint and listed the house for rent on the MLS. Normal.
What is not normal is that the painting has been done for at least 6 weeks and it's become painfully obvious that the painting co has been using the house as a home-base since then. They park their commerical van in the driveway all night. All day long different mini-vans/trucks of workers pull up, get out, get supplies, etc. At the end of the day it's not unusual for 10 guys to just be chilling on their lawn waiting for their ride. It's clear to me that they are doing this (I can see into their garage which is stocked full of painting supplies) and it's clear to me that by keeping the sign up in the yard they are trying to 'trick' people into thinking the work is being done there (it is not).
It's illegal in my town to park commercial cars (with commerical plates, I mean) in driveways overnight. It's also illegal to run certain kinds of businesses out of homes in my area (not the right zoning).
Do I call the cops? Do I assume they are just 'squatting' until the house is rented? FWIW the MLS rental listing is no longer up.

I would call the non-emergency line and tell them what you told us. If I was trying to rent out a house and that was happening, I would be TICKED, and extremely grateful for the neighborly alert.
Oh, I think the owners know full well what is going on. I think they either bartered the painting for allowing them to squat, rented directly to the painters or own the painting company themselves.
If I thought they were doing it w/o the owners knowing I would have called a long time ago.
I agree. If you can't contact the owner or listing agent, I would call the town/county. I don't know that the cops are the right people to call. It may be code enforcement or something.
Errr -
I guess I would need to know if someone in the painting company has actually begun to rent that house, or owns the house. DH parks his truck in our (rented house) drive way ... while most of his equipment and employees meet at his barn/garage (not at our house) there are days when they do and extra trailers are parked in our driveway.
BUT we also live in an area where cars in the street are allowed and blue collar people work out of their homes. And we don't have it everyday at our house. If this wasn't the case I would call DH tacky ...
Since you've said that your area has rules against these things then I would go ahead and report it, and for all you know said painting company is pulling a fast one on the people who own the house.
ETA: Report to the county/HOA, let them handle it.
Oh yea, Trickey, if it was allowed or the norm I wouldn't care. But it's all day long and they park in front of my house (allowed, but annoying) for a lot of the day.
The commercial plates and running a business like that out of a single-family house is what isn't allowed in the particular zoning of my area.
I don't have an HOA, so my plan is to report to the Town. We'll see.
