best sights to see

Hello fellow Nesties, we're planning a trip to Galveston in the next year to visit some family that just relocated there. My sister is a little down about the move and we'd love to come visit and help explore the area with them. While they will be living in Galveston, we are not opposed to making a trip or two into Houston.

So, I'm hoping some of you lovely ladies could offer up a few of your favorite places to visit. We're 25 and 23 and my sister and her husband are 27 and 28 and have a one year old daughter. We would love to be able to go out with the two of them for dinner and entertainment maybe one or two nights but would need kid friendly food and entertainment ideas for the rest of our trip (approx. a week).

I've done a little bit of research and a few I have come across are Bishop's Place, Moody Garden (though I am getting mixed reviews) and Schlitterbahn (which  I am dying to visit)

I have no places marked for dining yet though.

Again, any and all suggestions, tips, and reviews would be much appreciated!

Re: best sights to see

  • Kemah Boardwalk is fun

We have fantastic museums, so if that is your thing, you'd be missing out if you skipped them.

If you want to catch a play, there are a gazillion theaters

  • I don't really have an suggestions but I will say that Schlitterbahn Galveston is not all it's cracked up to be...at least in my opinion, it's way too expensive.  If they cut the price in half, than maybe it would be worth it.   If you are going to be down for a while (like a week or so), I'd take the time to go to New Braunfels and go to the original Schlitterbahn.

  • Agree with Kemah, museums, and theatre.  Definitely check out Moody Gardens in Galveston!  It is a bit pricey but it is worth it.  Also, the Houston Zoo if you don't mind the drive and the traffic around there.  It is in the museum district and the area itself is pretty neat.  They even have a train for around the park near the zoo that kids love.  As far as a kid friendly restaurant down in Galveston, your neice would probably like the Rainforest Cafe.  Not 5star food but it will keep the kid entertained.  Another restaurant that kids love is the Aquarium.  My daughter is 12 and she still loves going there to check out the huge aquaruims and the sting ray exhibit.

  • Moody Gardens is fantastic, but not cheap. If you can, get the day pass and take your time (your sister may want to consider an annual pass for unlimited entry for a year... with the little one, they'll have a lot of fun!). The new rainforest exhibit is amazing, and the aquarium is very good too. Your niece will love Palm Beach next summer, and Festival of Lights during the holidays is great too.

Other activites in Galveston include duck tours, harbor tours, the free ferry to Bolivar, shopping on the strand... there are neat art galleries on Post Office Street for browsing and if you happen to be there at the right time, ArtWalk on Saturday night (I think every 6 weeks or so) is a lot of fun!

Food: I LOVE OUR RESTAURANTS. Greek - Olympia Grill; Mexican - The Original Mexican Cafe, Salsa's; Italian - DiBellas, Marios (there are two, some people like the one on 61st street, others the one on 7th and Seawall... they're both good... I like 7th and Seawall); Other - Mosquito Cafe, Sunflower Bakery; Fancy - Rudy and Pacos, Saltwater Grille, Luigis

If you go to Kemah, we LOVE T-Bone Tom's for BBQ.

Feel free to email me - anja marie at gmail dot com - if you have any other questions or if your sister does.

  • We absolutely LOVE schlitterbahn in Galveston!  It might be less than ideal with a 1 year old, though.

    In Galveston:

    The Spot

Cafe Michaelburger (super casual, delicious burgers)

Mosquito Cafe (omg, shrimp and grits, people!)

Moody Gardens (palm Beach there might be better for the 1 yr old)... i'm curious about the mixed reviews, it's really fun.

La King's in the Strand District-- it's an old-fashioned candy and ice cream shop with lots of charm.  Just walking around that area can be fun.  The Elissa (an old clipper ship you can tour) is fun, as is the Railroad Museum.

Rudy & Paco's is cute for a date night

Mario's is a good family place, tasty food.  THere's one on 61st and one on seawall.

I have heard great things about the Cajun Greek but never eaten there.

    Clear Lake area:

Nasa/Space Center Houston is neat, and they have a lot of museum-type kid stuff.  There's a Fuddrucker's right across the street.

There's a fine-dining restaurant called Cullen's near Nasa that is reallly good.  Tommy's Steak & Seafood is a great date-night restaurant.

The Kemah Boardwalk is a great place to go for a day or evening.  Lots of restaurants, shops, and rides.  Our kids loved it when they were little, and still love it now.

In Houston, there are a million things to do!

The Art & Science Museums are always fun, plus the zoo is wonderful.  Hermann Park is right outside of the zoo, so it's a nice day kind of walking around the park/garden center and going to the zoo or museums.  Bayou Bend Collection is an old mansion with beautiful gardens that's fun to tour.

Houston has  a wonderful arts community.

Depending on the time of year, The Heights Historic Homes Tour can be a lot of fun.  The Heights is one of Houston's older neighborhoods, very small-community.  19th street @ Yale there are a bunch of fun little shops, restaurants, and cafes.

If your'e down near the Museums, look up Niko Niko's.  It's a greek counter-service restaurant with really really good food.  Get the gyro platter, it does not disappoint : )

Downtown Houston has a cute park called Discovery Green. There's a splash pad there, lots of grassy space to run around, and lots of restaurants within a few block (Mia Bella, House of Blues are tasty places).

Yes, come while the mock-ups are still here!   :)  I will enlist an entourage to wave at your tram tour when you go by!

  • wow, thanks everyone for all your help! the food sounds amazing and we're not opposed to spending a little more money for a few great meals. I'd prefer to hit up locally owned restaurants and support the local economy rather than chains but I know my niece seemed to enjoy her first trip to the Rainforest Cafe recently.
