i always overpack. for nyc and mexico (my 2 only vacations planned at this point and probably for a while), i'm planning to carry on only. I figure, this way I won't over pack... good idea? lol.
do you over pack? how do you decide what to bring and what to leave?

we're having twins!
Re: packing for vacation
i'm an overpacker and i'm not afraid to admit it.
but i've started traveling with carry-on only since they started charging for check-ins.
i successfully packed for my socal/mexico trip (5 nights) in one rolly bag and one backpack (i might've spilled a little into h's backpack and rolly bag, but together, we did it with one each.
i packed for SC (3 nights) in just a rolly bag, and food in my backpack...but that's because h took some shoes for me early.

jumped ship to the new and improved nest. back to TB for baby boards.
what is a rolly bag??? i know nothing when it comes to luggage.. some one always offers to let us borrow theirs when we go on vacay but now i need to purchase my own. you don't suggest getting a little carry on suitcase? or is a rolly bag the same thing? i might need a PIP.
your h is sweet. he brought shoes for you already.. that would be hilarious if some one needed to look into his bag and saw all of his man stuff and then a few pairs of dainty heels.. lol. i guess they've probably seen worse.
this is what i call a rolly bag.

is this the exact thing you have? i don't even know where to start looking for this. i assume macy's or target even? i think i saw luggage at ross... where did you get yours? do you tend to fly with one airline? if not, have you had problems carrying it on? worst traveling fear #1: my bag won't be good enough to carry on...
and then i won't know what to do. good enough = correct measurements.
Pick a main color (either black or brown) and pack around that color. Bring the fewest amount of shoes in that color family. Only bring clothes that coordinate to the color family.
My pants/skirts are all work at least 4 times (unless I get really sweaty) each, so I hardly bring any bottoms.
Wear the heaviest things you have on you while flying and this will save space/weight in your bag.
Then lay out enough tops for each day and bring wraps or cardigans that can do double duty for multiple days.
I will also bring a small fold up bag that I can carry on, in case I buy too much and end up having to check my roller bag. I bring the smaller fold up bag to make extra sure that I never go over weight.
This might be a bit much for you, but I also travel with a small travel luggage scale.
And yes, I always flight either Alaska, Delta or AA (if I can help it), bc if you fly enough then you'll get miles and status with them. Just pick an airline and look for their code share partners and try to always fly them.
I never have to pay for checked bags now, almost always get bumped to first and am one of the first to get priority for changing my flight.
Here's the thing about carry ons, unless if you're on a small puddle jumper (in which case you will have to gate check) carry ons do not get beat up as much as checked bags. Go to Ross or some where like that and get a sturdy bag, but it doesn't need to be expensive. Look for something with good wheels and a smooth pulling handle, make sure it's as light as possible too.
If you want to invest in good luggage, I'd highly recommend Eagle Creek Luggage. It's available at REI. It's spendy, but has a life time guarantee. If the airlines rips your zipper pull of the bag, bends the frame, rips the fabric, etc... EC will replace it free of charge.
HTH!
love it. you're the best! thank you for taking all that time to write this. the reason i asked the airline is because i wanted to know if the carryons you guys have work for multiple. i'm flying alaska for both of my trips so i'll keep that in mind. yes, you do travel a ton. i can't believe you have a scale.. lol. before our honeymoon we weighed our bag at home!
i will take all these things into consideration and really appreciate all the insight!
Oh and the best thing ive ever found are these things called travel space bags. i get them at the container store or though drugstore.com, but ive also seen it at ross.
essentially theyre giant ziplock bags, but once you seal it up you can force all of the air out and your clothes take up less space.
everyone that ive lent some bags to have immediatley come home and bought their own set.
oooo, i'm gonna look for those!
also, when your in nyc, what do you pack? since you've been and yeah. we won't be going to a TON of nice restaurants but we will do our share of being out at night/evening. i imagine we'll go to a few.. when i think of nyc, i feel like i have to dress up like whoa.
I mostly wear skinny cropped black pants or skinny jeans and ballet flats when I go.
Throw in a black skirt and a LBD and you should be good to go.
Look for this: http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10006747&N=&Ntt=space+bags
UW's right: space bags are amazing. They are nice in checked luggage, too, b/c if they go through your luggage, everything stays tidy and contained and they aren't handling your actual clothing. And if something leaks, your clothes stay clean. We have compression bags for backpacking, so we use those, but things are more less likely to get wrinkled in the plastic ones.
I've seen good brands at Ross/TJMaxx/Marshalls (Samsonite, Victorinox, etc.), so you might find a good deal on a good brand.
Oh, and one more suggestion -- the bags with wheels that swivel are far superior to straight-mounted wheels.

ooo, thank you!
