No-cook meals

Since the potential for a hurricane is the hot topic of the day here at work, I'm thinking up meals we could make if we lost power.

Other than PB&J, crackers and summer sausage, salad, and cereal (assuming it's not a long blackout, or we use up the milk early before it goes bad)... I've got nothing. Our stove is electric. We do have a gas grill outside, so we could use that after the storm passes, but we'd be without a way to cook during the storm.

Have any no-cook meal suggestions?

Re: No-cook meals

  • We're in the same boat as you, Amy.  Electric stove, no gas in the house except we do have a gas grill outside.  But we're screwed if the electricity goes!  I am hoping to make some muffins and banana bread on Sat. night or early Sunday so we have that to snack on.
  • I have a dozen eggs to use. I think I'm going to end up hard boiling most of them, and maybe make a banana bread. Ugh. :(

  • I just made a big batch of pesto pasta salad. We, too, will be grilling if we lose power. Hope everyone stays safe.

  • Thanks for the help!

    We're up to:

    Chips and guacamole
    Chips and black bean salsa
Salad w/ hard boiled eggs (if I find time to hard boil eggs tomorrow...)
    Hummus wraps
    Fruit salad

Assuming power isn't out for a long time, and we still have cold dairy products:
    Cereal
    Yogurt
    Crackers, cheese, and summer sausage
Chicken salad sandwiches (made with canned chicken)

We also have a few meals that just require the grill. The grill is on a covered porch, so as long as the wind isn't too bad we can use that.

Now I have to find some place that still has ice for sale... I really want to pack our chest freezer full of frozen stuff and spare ice. I don't want to risk losing 200+ ounces of BM I have frozen in there....

  • Someone said that they were filling ziplock bags full of water and stacking their freezers with that.

  • Great ideas, Amy.  I am going to stop and get some chips & salsa, some hummus, and eggs so I can hard boil them tomorrow!

  • I have a gas stove so I'm not too worried although without electricity so I'm not sure about cooking too much.

I bought some cold fully cooked chicken at TJ's today as well as some black bean and roasted corn salsa and I can put that over salad.   I also just put a banana bread in the oven and bought a 5 lb bag of ice that is in my spare freezer right now to keep my cold stuff cold and from spoiling.  I have some large ziplock freezer bags with frozen water in my freezer too.
