If you were working in College Park
Specifically at the Univ of MD, where would you live to not have a
craptastic commute? I know it's a little unrealistic to think we'd have
no commute but DH would like it around 45 min- hour.
I'm from Anne Arundel county so I'm kind of pushing Crofton,
Millersville, etc but DH is convinced to go West like Silver
Spring/Gaithersburg.
I'm coming over from the Baltimore board, so hello and thanks ahead of time for any input. We're just trying to narrow it down.
Re: If you were working in College Park
St. John, USVI
I would think that your AA county ideas would be reasonable, but I am not very familiar with the area. I do know Montgomery County to UMD well. I grew up in Gburg, and while the drive would not be horrendous, I would consider that a last option. I commuted when I was went to MD, and it was doable, but you can do better.
Eastern Silver Spring would be ok, but avoid the beltway if you can.
Howard County, along 29/95, would be a good commute also- Fulton or Columbia. If you are considering moving to College Park, University Park (which sits next to CP) is an awesome community of older homes.
I'd probably go east Silver Spring or even Takoma Park. I used to live there while I was in grad school at UMD and I could make it in 15 minutes if I was in a hurry. That way you're also closer in to DC, metro, and everything in MoCo (I know nothing about Anne Arundel).
There are some cute neighborhoods around UMD too, especially if you're looking for a rental.

I think it depends on your budget and/or what kind of area you would like to live in. I think you would get more for your money in Anne Arundel County. I grew up in the Annapolis area and the drive to College Park is fairly easy. However, Crofton/Severna Park/Millersville/Odenton do not have the amenities that some of the places you mentioned in Montgomery County have.
Personally, I would not go to Gaithersburg because of local or 270/495 traffic but that is just me.
Thanks so much you all!
We will probably rent for a bit, so we're comfortable with renting right around there because it will only be temporary. I actually grew up in PG county so I know the area really well. it's just very different than when I was a kid.
I just wanted to make sure neither of our ideas were way off base. It's good to know that the Silver Spring to CP commute is against the flow of traffic, that's important.
It was late, I'm not sure why I said Gaithersburg, that is way further than I would ever want to go.
Meh. Not for a forever home, no. But we've been here seven years without any problems and like our neighborhood a lot.
Thank you! Sent you a PM.
I used to work in College Park near the UofMD and lived in Gaithersburg. It was an awful commute.
I now live in Wheaton and commuting to College Park would be easy, so I'd recommend Silver Spring/Takoma Park/Wheaton.
