I'm a customer of chase (I HATE chase) and they charge monthly fees and I had a banker that would go back in and refund them but he's transferred so he's not my banker anymore.
So, do you know of any banks that don't charge a service fee? :-)
TIA
Re: Banks and Bank Fees
I would look into credit unions. I do not know of any that charge fees.
(I would recommend mine but it won't help you since you are not HPD)
I've never been charged a service fee. For what just having an account with them?
I've been with my bank (BOA- another one most people hate but I haven't had problems with) a long time though so they may not offer it like that any more.
I know most credit unions don't charge fees.
We use a credit union and there are no fees.
There are plenty of credit unions whose only requirement is that you be a resident of a certain area. I would look for recs for a local one.
We use Amegy and have their "Smart Yield Checking"... its essentially a money market. We don't get any fees and we earn a small amount of interest as long as we use our debit card as a credit transaction 10 times a month. (I assume they still have it).
Yep. I had play around with our direct deposits to make suer that a minimum of $500 was direct deposited in each account every month.
And yes, almond-a fee just for having the account. $12 a month!
WHY having $500/month direct deposited is any different than what I used to have, which was it was all DD'd into the joint account and then we transferred $$ to our individual accounts online, I can't quite figure out.
Check capital one, I'm pretty sure they have a lot of free checking options. We were looking at switching there from Chase when they started throwing fees at my business account. With savings and our mortgage ending up with chase we don't have to worry about fees any more.
We have Wells Fargo and they only charge a fee if your account balance is less than $5k for all linked accounts.
I was with Woodforest Nat'l Bank before that and LOVED them. They have absolutely free checking, no fees. I would have stayed but the only Woodforest out here is inside Kroger and since my paycheck isn't direct deposit, I'm lazy and wanted a bank with a drive thru. :-)
If/When Wells Fargo starts charging the $3 per month for using a debit card then I'm changing back for sure.

This exactly. I've had multiple accounts with them for about seven years and never been charged a fee - not sure it's like this anymore but I do know it's never changed for me. I've never had any fees on any of my accounts for just having them.
Our personal Chase account is free.
I also have a Bank of TX account that is free - they have a free small business account too.
strange.... they waive my fee as long as my account that has a direct deposit is linked to my other accounts.
I never receive any monthly fees with Chase and have been with them FOREVER! What sort of fees are they charging you?
ETA: My business account is with Capital One with 0 fees. I thought about switching my personal accounts over but I have way to much linked to my chase account to bother.

How do you link the accounts together? They told me since each account has a separate number (even though I can see them all when I log into my bank account), they each have to meet the requirements to not be charged. I did talk to a dumba$s, though, so I am tempted to call again and verify. She kept re-reading the email that was sent to me - and I was like - yes, I have that in front of me...I can read.
I'm with the HPFCU and I LOOOOVE THEM! I'm so glad I joined when I worked there as a civilian.
Anyway...to the OP, I opened a Chase account last year for some things I needed to do and they told me that the only way to not have the fees is to have direct deposit. Since dh is the only one working and his go into our credit union account, I didn't have that option. Our fee is only $6 a month but I hate it and I'm thinking of closing it soon since I don't really need it anymore.
Charles Schwab. No fees, interest earning checking and they refund atm fees from any atm you use. And the customer service is AWESOME.
So Tasty, So Yummy
Chase doesn't charge us a fee, but DH's paycheck is mostly deposited there.
Bank of America, DH is closing his account there because $100 DD used to be enough, but now it's not and they're charging $10/mo. I can't even imagine why anyone would stay with a bank that charged a fee like that.
Monthly fee on what?
We have Capital One and don't pay any fees.
The pleasure of holding your money. With chase, my personal account was going to be charged $7 per month, and my business $12. I was going to have to keep a $7500 ave daily balance in my account to avoid fees. How practical is that for most small businesses????????

We have Chase and don't pay any fees. We have a savings, checking, and line of credit (that we never use, but never bothered to close), and each of the kids has an account. The kids accounts are free and linked to our primary accounts. I think our checking and savings are free because we have direct deposit. I would change banks before I'd pay a fee. That's why I left BOA. I switched jobs and skipped on DD and they charged me a fee... Pissed me off, so I moved to WaMu, but they are now Chase.
This is what I have also, and you can use any ATM with no fees and personalize your ATM card with a picture.
I think most of the big banks recently started charging fees on accounts that don't keep a minimum balance or have direct deposit. Chase still has some that are free if you meet certain criteria, so maybe look into switching the type of account if you don't want to switch banks.
I can't do DD because we are too small. I pay a fee for DD so it kind of defeats the purpose.
Unfortunately... I have a business account, 2 checking accounts, 2 savings accts and 1 for the kids each. GRRRRRRRR

The one below is the checking we have. We also have 2 other types I believe as well.
