Does anyone (Engineering gals, maybe?!) have the first clue about generators? We've been meaning to get one for a while to, at a minimum, keep our sump-pump going in the event of a bad storm that knocks out power for longer than the battery back-up lasts. This weekend's potential hurricane is making me think maybe now is not a bad time to pull the trigger (as if there will be any left, but anyway....)
So, where do I even start? Is there something I should look for? Any advice?
Re: Uh...generators.
We have a small "just in case" generator. Runs on gas, and is basically just to power the fridge/necessities in case of an outage. It's only meant to be used for a short period of time. We've only had to use it once....but it does give you piece of mind.
It looks like this although I am not sure what brand or how many watts ours actually is.

We've considered getting a generator for our house and DH really wants one for tailgating (to power TV and a fan). For tailgating, I know that the Honda generators are supposed to be nice and quiet, but that is less of a concern for home use.
This site has some good info on the different types of generators:

There are the types you fill up with gas and then there are ones that connect directly to your natural gas line (very expensive but last longer). Size is another factor - how much juice do you need to run your house? Do you only need to run the sump pump? Or do you want to also run HVAC, lights, fridge, stove (if electric).
Here's a calculator to estimate your wattage need:

Cool, thanks. I'm guessing we'd get the gas one (we keep gas in the detached garage for our lawn mower already).
My boss went to Home Depot today (he lives in CT) and they laughed at him. I guess they are sold out. Everywhere. So much for that project, lol!
