Forecast isn't getting any better.

"Extreme" threat level. Lovely.  I'm not even sure how I should be preparing.

Re: Forecast isn't getting any better.

  • I know.   Before owning a house, and now having a kid, storms used to be so fun.  Now between flooding and downed tree panic to keeping milk cold w/o power - - it's just not fun to think about.  Blah.
  • I know. I'm really worried about flooding. My basement flooded really badly about a year and a half ago and I don't want that to happen again.

  • My street is bad about that.  The county actually did a huge storm drain project the year before we moved in and it's helped.......some.  Thankfully our previous owners installed a french drain/perimeter drain and a sump pump so even when water gets it, it hasn't flooded yet and the pump has managed to handle it.  And I assume that will work again as long as we keep power.  Power is key.
  • Come inland for the weekend and stay at the casa de Trickey. :)

  • I think the most important thing is GAS.  Gas up all your vehicles and get some gas cans.  In the week following, the lines for gasoline were 9+ hours long.

  • Also, definitely stock up on water and edibles.  That was another thing- until Ike, I didn't realize how crazy it would be to get food.  We were really naive going into it, and were thankful for my parents for thinking ahead.  Whenever I left work the Friday before Ike hit, the forecast was still saying the hurricane was supposed to hit Corpus- which is a few hundred miles away from here.  Darn things are so freakin' unpredictable.

I would also grab a tarp and maybe some boards and and plastic dropcloths.  When the tree went through our house, my H made a "lake" by stacking boards in a big rectangle and draping the dropcloths over them.  He used buckets to discard the water into the toilet.  It really minimized the water damage to our house.  I can't help with the basement issue as I live in basement-less land.  And the tarp is important because we were able to cover the hole a long time before the blue roof folks came around.
