What are you reading?
What are you reading (or what have you read lately) and would you recommend it? I like to do these posts occasionally to see what's good out there.

I just started reading The Pillars of the Earth. I'm really enjoying it so far and can barely put it down.
I recently read The Warmth of Other Suns which is about The Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson. I found the whole book very thought provoking and learned a lot. I also read Anna Karenina finally. I'm glad I finished it, but I'm not sure it was worth the read for me.
Overall, it's been a heavy reading summer. Last week I read The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott. It was okay, but hard for me to really enjoy since it's such a different type of book then what I've been reading lately.
This book puzzles me. I read the first 100 pages or so and thought it was slow and dry as heck and put it down. But people seem to rave and rave about it (and I loved one of his other way less known books). I don't know why I'm having that reaction. Does it get better?
Oh, and I listened to an abridged version of Anna Karenina on tape. Fine way to do it! Good for you for getting through the whole thing!
I think I mentioned this when I was reading it but I thought City of Oranges: An Intimate History of Arabs and Jews in Jaffa was very interesting. I'm rereading Pat of Silver Bush (an L.M. Motgomery book) until I get the first of the Murdoch Mysteries series for my birthday next month. They're the books the TV series is based on.

I really love historical fiction from almost any time period, so I think that's why it has sucked me in. I think it's slowed down a bit, but it's hooked me enough that I'm trying to read it whenever I can.
What was his other book you loved?
I started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but couldn't get into it. I need to start over and try again.
For some reason, I'm not that motivated to pick it up either. Might not be in the right mood for it right now... I may pick up something else for a while.

I just read The Help and really enjoyed it. I have no idea why I waited so long to pick it up!

I've heard a lot of people say this. I've also heard them say you can skip the first 100 pages.

I generally have a "read 50 pages and if I hate it, put it down" rule so we'll see how this works out. I refuse to waste time reading something that isn't interesting to me.

I know! I don't get it either. Seems like a lot of books start slow like that. Heck, even the Twilight books that sold millions start off incredibly slow. Makes me wonder if there's a dearth of editors or something. It's not good writing if people are bored!

I'm reading A Dance With Dragons, book 5 of the Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin. My husband sucked me into this series, and I have to admit that I love it.
OK, the gals on the book board are raving about this series. Is it new? Am I going to have to wait forever at the library to get them? Or did they come out a while ago? (I hate having to wait months or years for books in a series to be released.)
I believe the first book, A Game of Thrones, came out in the 80's. The fifth book just recently came out. So yeah, there's a long wait between books. The TV show on HBO has helped with the withdrawal though. I have no idea if there will be a wait at the library, but they are EVERYWHERE in the bookstore.
