Green and Frugal Nesties, come in.

The dilemma:  Paint the living room

The solutions:

1.  Use recycled paint from the hazardous waste drop off center for FREE.

2.  Buy expensive "green" low VOC paint.

Mind you I have a new baby six months old.

What to do?  Are there solutions 3, 4, and 5?

Re: Green and Frugal Nesties, come in.

  • I would buy the expensive low VOC paint because I'd be worried about the baby.  I'd also be worried about getting enough of one color that I'd like (in good condition) from recycling.  I don't know what recycling usually gets but what I give is the dried up leavings in a rusted out can that's been in the garage for way too long.

I guess the ideal is that you could find low VOC paint at recycling but I'd think that chances of that (in large enough quantity and a color you'd like) is slim to none and slim just left town.

  • I'd go for the more expensive low VOC paint. I don't remember off the top of my head if Sherwin-Williams has this in their paint line but their paint is really good (used it for our master bedroom when they had 40% and only had to use one coat).

  • There are less expensive low VOC paints.  Home Depot has one that's not advertised as low VOC but it actually is.  I forget the name but it's like their store brand.  We've used it and really liked it.
  • I'd probably go with low VOC.

Btw, where can I find a paint recycling center? The old owners of our house left TONS of paint and I don't know what to do with it besides take it to the dump/hazardous waste place and that seems wasteful.

  • I'd also go with the low VOC paint.

I'm not sure you'll be able to find the color and the amount of paint you want from the hazardous waste drop off center. You could also post on your local Freecycle group and ask if anyone has some left over of VOC paint to give away, but again, I'm not sure if it'd be of the right color and amount.

If it's still usable paint, you could call up the local school district, local Habitat for Humanity or your local public housing authority and see if they have some use for it. They need paint and probably wouldn't mind the free stuff?

I'd go with the low VOC paint, especially with a new baby.

  • I guess it depends on how much space I have to paint.  I think I'd try a request on freecycle before hitting up the dump.

If it's a room the baby will spend a lot of time in, I'd go low VOC.

this. especially considering - in addition to what everyone else said - matching the colors would be a nightmare.

in the grand scheme of things, even $$$ paint is less expensive than other decor tricks. (and lung disease.)

I'm going to check freecycle for low VOC paint, I think.  The other thought was to paint and move out for a while until everything off-gasses.
