memorial donation for a pet?

My parents had to put their rescued Yorkie to sleep last week, she was ~12.  Very sad, but she had a lot of health problems and it was time.

I want to make a donation in her memory, but I'm debating whether to do it to the rescue where they got her or the Humane Society or the ASPCA.

I know any of them will be fine, but would you have a preference if it was your dog?

Re: memorial donation for a pet?

  • I would go with where they adopted her from.
  • Local... the national organizations spend a lot of their funds on advocacy work, which is important, but not as personal as helping one animal directly.

  • ditto...the rescue.

My aunt is a volunteer up in NJ and in PA where she lives at a few shelters.  We always make donations there for Christmas and her birthday on her behalf because she's 80 years old and really doesn't need anything.  The shelters are always really grateful and I know it makes my aunt happy too.  So it's a win/win all around.  I'm sure the rescue and your parents will be appreciative.

  • ditto PPs- the local rescue org or a local shelter/rescue.

We still send a check to the shelter that we adopted Dixon from- I used to send updates to woman who ran the place and she was always so grateful for the $50 a year we sent.

They also spend money on tons of junk gifts to send out to people to entice them to donate. I gave a small donation ONCE years ago to the Humane Society and literally every week I get a package of address labels, stickers, magnets, tote bags, etc... I wish they would just save that money and help the animals with it.

This. You might even be able to make the donation in memory of your parents' dog. Lots of t&p to your family.

  • update - I contacted the rescue and am sending a donation.

She found my parents in her records - their dog was older than I realized.  I had my numbers wrong - the dog was 18, they'd had her for 12 years!
