question about other boards. just bored and curious.

I noticed on the national boards there are a ton of posters who are always changing their screen names. (Not the local boards). It's really puzzling to me. Most of the time everyone knows who they are anyway. What am I missing here?

  • The more active national boards....MM, PC&E, TIP, ML.......for starters

  • I think on ML and TIP posters get banned

  • it just seems like a lot of unnecessary drama....this is probably a sign that I lurk on these boards waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.

  • but they're there for the drama?  This board is drama free, but its also BOOORING

  • I agree.....its amusing to watch from a distance but not something I would ever participate in. It just seems like some people change their identities like they change underwear. Weird.

  • I think they do it to hide from people IRL. I was just now reading a post about a woman saying she was changing her SN because her MIL found the internet. Although that doesn't necessarily mean she would come over here and stalk her. I was engaged and perusing TK for months before I discovered the message boards.

That's why I changed my screen name.  Not that I'm "hiding" - you all know who I am, my blog is still in my sig, etc.  But FIA was a screen name I used for *everything* - IM handles, email, etc.  And it was too easy to put FIA+My Real Name together, and I didn't want an employer or potential employer to be able to track me down here so easily.  I'm less worried about family.

  • I can tell you some of the reasons MMers and PCErs do it - google-ability of their SNs, scared to death of their post counts (as in a "I'm so embarrassed lets never speak of my 30k posts again" way lol), and not wanting people IRL to know who they are. One mMer recently had an incident in real life that freaked her out and prompted her name change. The one person over there I think absolutely should won't listen to me.......boo on her!

What happened, did some freak find her by stalking?

Also, some people have been unable to log into their accounts and have to make new ones. It is hard to keep track of, though!

  • About 10 times a week I think "I REALLY need to change my sn"  I'm on here too much to be using a sn with my name.  But then I can't think of a new one I like so I let it go and the whole thing starts again,
  • Yeah, I changed mine when I moved from the Knot to the Nest, but that was because my screen name was really hard to spell and confusing.

I figured out who one of the frequent identity-changers was the other day and I totally had a "Finkel is Einhorn! Einhorn is Finkel!" moment.

you could change to "LSG" or something.  then people would still know who you are.
