Question about Irene...

We don't have cable so I'm kind of out of the loop on this hurricane thing... was just wondering, is it the case that we stocked up on groceries, water, candles etc...

Are any of you getting "prepared", so to speak?

Re: Question about Irene...

  • Trying to... got similar supplies as you...

I'm scared being in a high rise...and I'm nervous about my car being out on the street (but the news said not to use underground parking.)

I am really hoping it moves more west and loses power..

  • On my regular grocery run to Trader Joe's, I bought some extra food (and apparently everyone else on the UWS had the same idea) in the event that the power goes out.  I'm not really expecting anything outside of losing power for a few hours and the subway being a PITA.

And depending on how it shifts, we might remove the A/C unit from the window.  I think that's it.  A co-worker of mine from Florida said we should probably have some flashlights too with batteries.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
  • I would definitely stock up on some supplies. I went to the grocery store last night to get some cases of water and the shelves were practically empty. I found a stock pile in the middle of the back aisle, but there were only about 10 or so cases left...we got 3. I saw on the news that you should have at least 1 gallon of water for each person in your house. Definitely get a flash light and batteries...also, stock up on non-perishable foods (cans, individually wrapped, etc.).

We live in SI and both my sister and my parents are in one of the zones (sis is in zone A and 'rents in zone C). We may be heading west to PA tonight, if not tomorrow...we'll play it by ear. Stay safe!

  • I know hurricanes so I don't mess.

We are getting canned foods, flour, bread, bananas, biscuits, batteries and water plus I am filling some buckets in case there is no water to bathe & cook.

Better be safe than sorry. Ms. Irene is the real deal in my opinion. I am a scaredy cat just like MrsDe Stick out tongue

Great idea on filling buckets... I think I'll fill up some pots with water. We have a gas stove, so we can still make pasta at least if we lose power.

  • We're just grabbing a couple of items from the grocery store, not going crazy.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker ...here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart I carry your heart(I carry it in my heart)
  • We removed the ACs from the windows, locked everything up, and turned off power to a few non-essential appliances/electronics. I'm a wee bit nervous because we are on our way to a wedding now. Staying at a hotel for a few days. H is in the wedding party. I suppose if things get bad on Sunday, I guess we could stay another night. H has to work on Monday but not until the afternoon.
  • My DH is going out of town this weekend, perfect timing!  Gah!

Before he left, he put all the stuff in our backyard in the shed. I have a flashlight and our house is already candle-central.  We lost power for three days last year during the tornado, so I'm prepared for that again.  As far as food and water - we have three cases of bottled water that we are supposed to use for DD's birthday party, but if we need it, I'll drink it!  LOL.  We just got a fresh direct delivery so we have some food - there is always random stuff to munch on in my house, so I'm not really worried about going hungry.

The three things I am most worried about is (1) power going out (2) basement flooding and (3) the two big sycamores in front of my house falling down ONTO my house.  The first two we have prepared for as much as we can, there is really nothing we can do about the last :-(

Yeah this is me too. There is a huge tree that kinda leans toward our house. I cannot even begin to imagine how we would deal with a tree crashing into our house. So depressing. :(

  • Having been through a bunch of hurricanes and tropical storms in florida I would add that one of the essentials that people don't think of until it is too late is cash.

ATMs aren't going to be restocked, they will run out of cash. If the power shuts down ATMs will go down and while some places may take credit cards the old fashioned way, ie not by computer, debit cards probably won't work at all.

It is just a good idea to have extra cash on hand.
