Home Buying Woes UPDATED

Well we all knew they would pop up at some point!

Cliffs Notes:

- Agreed on an offer and went to contract, with an estimated closing of October 17

- They were in Canada for two weeks and unable to countersign

- Came back Monday and signed, but this morning sent an addendum requestion "On or About November 18th" as the closing date. My lawyer says that the on or about lets them have up to 30 days past the date on the contract.

SO now if they took as long as they were allowed to I wouldn't be moving in until DECEMBER. Not optimal moving time. We are concerned because we want to lock in an interest rate that will be good for 60 days and not have the rate go up because they are dragging their feet to find a house. They have had their house on the market for so long you would think they had some kind of idea what they were looking for.

If you were in my shoes what would you do? Tell them no, that they already agreed to October 17th. Counter with an offer around November 1, or give them what they are asking for?

I just want this all over already so I can be in my house!

Update: We decided to give them a dead stop date of November 17th. Technically they were allowed to do this already, but it at least shows that we are being kind of flexible, but that we won't let them push us around so they can get everything they want. There are two groups of people here!

Thanks for all of the encouragement ladies!

  • Ridiculous!  I would counter with November 1.  That gives them a good two months to get their a$$es in gear (why they aren't already who knows!).  I really don't think they would be wanting to move in the middle of winter either!

  • We moved December 18th (its a good date!!)

That being said for the interest rate thing my friend had a similar issue. Her sellers were due with their baby on/about their original date.  Anyway they agreed to pay the fees associated with it to lock in the better interest rate. You should look into that. Could be a Jersey thing but you should really look into it and ask!!

  • I know, it's frustrating.  Waiting is the hardest part and it sucks even more when the seller gets a bug up their butt and purposely keeps pushing it back just to aggravate us.

I would tell them they already agreed on October 17 so maybe counter the November 1 at the latest.  Let their stupid asses get a month-to-month apartment lease until they find a house.  It's not your fault they're a couple of dumbass idiots who putz around!!!

    Fingers crossed for you.

  • I have no words of wisdom (we rent), but I just wanted to say: Hang in there!!!  I would be so anxious to move too, but it will happen and it will be fabulous when it does :)

  • So basically this is all being held up because they were off gallivanting in Canada? How annoying.

Can you ask the lawyers to take out the "on or about" and put a set date?  If not, then Nov 1st is more than a reasonable compromise.

Hang in there, it's going to be complete aggravation from now until the day you move in.  But, it will be worth it :)

  • I would go with November 15th. They will feel like they get an entire extra month, but without the "on or about" you won't have to worry about them staying longer.

If your mortgage rate has a chance of going up by a certain date then make it five days before that date.
