Mandee!

I read on your blog that you started school and are taking drawing! I loved my drawing classes. Except figure drawing sometimes staring at naked people you don't want to see naked for two hours isn't fun.  Anyway I wanted to ask what your going for degree wise and good luck!

ps. the only way I got through physics was drawing an example of the physics question I was trying to write an explanation for. :D

Re: Mandee!

  • ahhh, thank you! I'm really excited for the drawing class... it seems that the professor will really allow some freedom as far as interpretation, which is good for me, cause I rarely like to draw things as I see them. I'm more of a "color outside the lines" kind of artist, I guess.

right now I'm working on my A.A.S. in Interior Design. I started the program right out of high school and then took a bit of a break because I got hit in the face with adulthood (buying a house and having to work full time as opposed to just being able to have daddy pay for school). sooooo I'm picking up where I left off... I've got 14 credits left and these are the last two of my pre-requisite classes! :)

  • Yeah!!! I have a Bachelors in I.D. from the University of Georgia. :) I'm currently studying to take the NCIDQ exam for ID. It's been 5 years since I've studied anything so it's bringing back flash backs.

If you ever need anything design related let me know.  My firm deals with commercial and residential design and the other half of the company I work for deals in Italian Kitchens. I wear many hats at this small firm.

  • I will definitely let you know if I need anything! my DREAM is to have my own design business, doing either high end residential spaces or food industry commercial, like upscale restaurants and bars. I actually wouldn't mind specializing in one certain area like lighting and furniture design either. I love this field SO much, and even more because there's such a large technical part that most people don't realize, haha.

good luck with the NCIDQ! what would that mean for you, career wise? would you continue to work for the firm you're at now or try to move up within?

Can I hug you for that.

Whenever I met someone for the first time and they ask me what I do. They always assume I pick out pillows. I can and do on occasion but the job is so much more than that.

I haven't had the opportunity to do a restaurant yet but have been fortunate enough to do some very fun residential jobs for people that let me buy some amazing things. I have also done commercial work like a Mercedes Car dealership. Since I work for a small firm, 3 people currently, I get to do a lot of different things. Sort of a Designer, project manager, CAD drafter, furniture fixture specifier all in one. every day is different.

The NCIDQ shows that I have the knowledge, education, and field experience.  It also will allow me to ask for a larger salary and be a more well rounded designer. Once I pass I will continue to take classes to be certified and will always be learning.  I think it is something that is very important since the I.D field is always changing. The test is also something that isn't required by all states now but I think it will be in the future. It's a way to separate the designers from decorators.

haha, don't you love that? most people think it's about matching colors and picking out fabrics... they don't take into account the actual WORK part like the space planning, and specifications, and permits. people think there's not a right or wrong way to design, when there are tons of rules, just like any other profession. I've actually had someone ask me why I would waste money and time going to school for a hobby... needless to say, I wanted to punch her in the face, haha.

I love small companies like yours... it definitely shows talent when people can perform tasks in so many different ranges. I work for a construction business right now, so I've learned a lot as far as how buildings are constructed and I know how to read blueprints. I can't WAIT to learn CAD though... it'll make life much easier. :)

ahhh, designers vs. decorators... that's exactly where my thought process was going in regards to how people view ID. I'm sure you'll do great on the test! I've had a bunch of people ask me to help them with house stuff, so I think I might actually start doing that just to get some experience.
