Hairdresser payment conundrum...am I compensating fairly?

Short version of the story is that my stylist no longer works at a salon, but sees me in her home.  When she worked at the salon, a cut usually cost $35 to $38 (plus a $10 tip) and cut + highlights cost $70-$75 (plus a $20 tip).

I had seen her at her home a long time ago for color and cut...I think I gave her $80 total, but then I worried that it was not enough.  She has said that she does not set prices for her clients that come to her...it's up to the client.

So, my conundrum: is $50 ok for a cut and $80 ok for a cut + highlights?

  • For cut and color i'd do 80, and 40 for cut.
  • I would pay whatever you used to pay at the salon. She shouldn't expect you to pay more, so at least you know you're not ripping her off if you pay the same amount!

  • That's probably more generous than I'd be. She has zero overhead costs, so she's taking home 100% of what you give her. I'd probably give her $35 for a cut and $75 for cut and color, no tip.

    Excellent point and I agree.
