East coasters!

Ok, I have to admit that I'm pretty terrified right now of this hurricane.  DH is on his way home now from a biz trip, and when he gets home we have to make sure we bring all the outside stuff into the shed.  I have bottled water, candles and plenty of food (non perishable and stuff that doesn't need to be cooked or heated in order to be eaten, in case I don't have power)

What else are you doing to prepare?  So far I haven't heard anything about evacuations, but I'm terrified that our house is going to sustain damage.  I dunno, I'm sort of freaking out.

Nesties, send your T&P's to us please!!!!

Re: East coasters!

  • You guys have all been in my thoughts this week.  I really hope Irene weakens and doesn't do much damage.  Hopefully things will be ok.  Please keep us posted so we know you are ok.

I am glad you posted this Lindsay!  I was wondering exactly what we're expecting in our neck of the woods.  I guess I am in la la land over here..not paying any attention!

Praying for you Allison!  You sound super duper prepared!

  • I think it's supposed to be a Category 1 when it hits there - is that still true? If so, you sound prepared. Maybe some flashlights/batteries would be a good idea in addition to the candles.

A category 1 may knock the power out and some trees down, but structurally you should be okay. I heard that if you put duct tape in an "X" shape on your windows it can either prevent them from blowing out, or at least minimize the damage. I don't want to scare you because normally this isn't going to happen during a cat 1 anyway, but it might make you feel better to tape 'em up!

How close are you to the coast or the track of the storm? You might want to consider getting a weather radio to keep up to date on the storm if you lose power and fill a bathtub with water for use in flushing the toilet (you'll lose the pump if the power goes out). Also, flashlights are much safer than candles if you can get your hands on some. Charge your cell phones to full power or get a car charger so you can keep in touch with family.

I think we are far enough inland that things won't get too bad, but my parents are fairly close and they are still considering whether or not to leave and come stay with us. I guess they'll decide some time tonight.

I hope things don't get to bad for you and anyone else in the way! I'll be thinking about you ladies!

  • It really is scary. I am a little bit north of NYC so we aren't going to get it as bad but we have all been told to take all the precautions we can. I have never been through a hurricane, but here are some of the things I have heard:

I would also add wine to the list, no power and crap weather it might be necessary.

Also, batteries for a radio so you can check and see what is going on?

Fill up your gas tank, just in case.

Some cash on hand is also supposedly good.

  • Ohhh yeah like Breanne said definitely fill up your gas tank, and get cash. If the power goes out then you won't be able to use a credit card at most places.
  • Is it bad I haven't been preparing AT ALL?? The most preparing I have is making sure I pick up some more Ginger Beer & Goslings Dark Run for Dark & Stormy's.

We have an apt, so we really don't have to worry about much. I think we have enough batteries though and I have a bunch of candles in case the power goes out. hah

My first hurricane, all I did to prepare was get some beer and tequila, and pack an overnight bag to stay at my friend's. Boy was I regretting my decision not to have ample bottled water available in the morning - nothing like a hangover + no power + 100 degree heat and no water.

The moral of this story is: get water. :)

  • We bought some water and batteries and snack food (granola bars, crackers, packets of tuna, and a few canned goods).  We are under a Tropical Storm warning right now so hopefully it won't be too bad.  Just gotta clear off our balcony later tonight and find a place for all our stuff in our apt.

  • Hi girls! ::waving::

It's been like forever, but I've been doing some "drive by" posting over the past couple of weeks since my workload went berzerk :-)

Where we live in a suburb just outside of Baltimore, we're being told that either way we may be in for it. Being situated right at the top of the Chesapeake Bay, we typically have flooding, especially in downtown Baltimore by our Harbor, Fells Pt and where I work, the "new" Harbor East. This will be our first hurricane in our home, so now way to know what to expect there as far as potential flooding, but I am seriously concerned about falling trees!

Our neighborhood is a stately old girl, with tons of 100-200 year old tall trees which are a huge part of what is beautiful about our community. They are so tall, that although only one tree in our backyard is close to our house, if any of the others (or even our neighbors) trees fall, we could be in the crosshairs...I love our trees, and really don't want a tree to fall through our roof, so...here's hoping!

On the prep side, in addition to what was mentioned, also think about (we'll be doing this as well):

**Battery operated lanterns, like you take camping. We've found they give off more light, are less dangerous and easier to manage than candles burning around the house.

**Fill your bathtub with water the night before, and keep a bucket nearby. You'll need this to flush your toilets if your local sewage system is impacted in any way.

**If you have a charcoal grill, keep it in an accessible place. They are perfect to cook on in the event of a prolonged power outage.

**A basic one, but charge your mobile phones.

I will keep us all in T&P's this weekend. Here's hoping that when we reconvene to talk about our weekends, we'll all be here safe, sound and if we're lucky, maybe this thing will weaken and disappear :-)

  • I am feeling pretty well prepared, plenty of food, gas in our cars, cash in the house, flashlights and candles.  Now we just have to tie down our patio furniture and we should be all set.

No one in our neighborhood is boarding up windows, so we are going to take our chances with that.  Hubby is hoping we get a new fence outta this storm, we need one anyway, and ours is pretty beat up LOL maybe it'll blow away!

And no, I don't think we'll be having hurricane sexy time.  I'll prob be too scared to get in the mood! HAHA

Be safe everyone!!!!  I will check in, as long as I have power :)

  • looks like the gov just declared a state of emergency in MA.

    I officially don't like this.

  • Alli I am with you....the more the day goes on the more nervous I am getting about everything. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they are saying, but it is good that we are all preparing as much as we can.

  • I am completely freaked out, and even DH seems nervous. We've done all we can do - our car is on the 5th floor of a parking garage, the patio furniture has been brought in, we have plenty of water, food, and candles. I feel like we will be okay, I'm just really worried about how Hoboken is going to look when this is all over.

If it weren't for the cats we'd be on our way to my mom's or sister's house right now. But we can't take them, and we both feel we'd be more stressed out and anxious leaving them than we will be staying. Our cat sitter said he would check on them but he lives in the next town over and I don't see how he could get here.

  • I have been filling plastic bags with Brita water and sticking them in the freezer to help fill it up (a full freezer will stay cold longer than an empty one).  Bathtub needs to be filled as well.  But other than that I think we've got everything - batteries, flashlights, canned food and other non-perishables, diapers, wipes, paper plates and disposable utensils, prescriptions filled... now I just wish that DH would get home and that M would take a nap in his cradle or crib so I could get the dishes washed.
