Irene

So who is getting their ark ready?  DH has gone from "This is no big deal...we're still going to Cape Cod" to "Buy some water!  We need a radio!  Where are the candles?" -- complete freak out mode.  How did I get to be the calm one this situation?  I think we'll be fine (but I won't be leaving the house).

Re: Irene

  • I am looking forward to being in the hospital all weekend being waited on while this storm takes place.

I took in all Jack's toys inside today to prepare and showed DH where the batteries and candles are.

  • Ugh I had to go regular grocery shopping unfortunately today and it was a madddd house @ 4pm and the crazies were out in full force. There was a guy with 3 carts of dry cereal, then I saw him later with 2 carts full of gallons of water and then again after that with 2 carts full of milk and bread. Brent is a neurotic in regular life and weather so this has his panties in a real bunch... and apparently I didn't prepare enough canned items so we dont have to open the fridge. Oh well I have goldfish, chips and dip, and milanos. I'm just concerned about having enough wine, the use of tv, and the interwebs. I bet you there will be a lot of May babies!!

  • my whole condo is powered on electric. when we loose power we have no stove, hot water or anything so we're going to be hanging out at the IL. normally it wouldn't be a big deal but dh is worried because im pregnant. dh and i are going over there for dinner tonight to help my FIL move some stuff upstairs from the basement because if they loose power their subpumps will not work and their basement will flood. (3 years ago they had 4 feet of water in their basement that ended up in thousands of dollars of damages)

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
  • I'll probably be home by myself with A. DH is pretty sure he's being held over and will have to work a double, so he ran around yesterday and made sure we had plenty of batteries for flashlights, and I'll bust out all my candles. I'm not looking forward to entertaining a toddler with no power alll day so I'm hoping it doesn't go out too early.

  • I have candles I can pull out.

My townhouse is in a strip of 4 - and the super happens to be my neighbor, so his is all decked out with a sub pump (?? is that the right word?)  and he has generators so he said we should be ok.

I just hope that we don't get water in the basement because it does tend to happen here.

    Thank goodness for Renters Ins.

  •  Eh, not much.  Been there, done that.

We always have plenty of candles on hand and I have several boxes of long-shelf-life milk for G if we should lose power long enough that it compromises the fridge perishables (I always have a few on hand for when we travel).  That's about it!  I'm not stocking up on food because if we lose power for a significant time, it's just going to spoil.

We have no outdoor space with our condo so, nothing to secure there.  DH need to go over to my IL's tonight to secure the things on their back porch (they are overseas).

My biggest "concern" is that I mam working all day on Saturday in the Bronx.  If the storm tracks earlier than expected I will likely have a helluva ride back home on the parkways.

  • we got a yankee candle as a gift...so i have one candle!

we have flashlights and i think one is even handcranked. we always have batteries on hand. we'll charge the phones and ipod and will get some juice from the laptop for a while.

we have cereal and bread and bananas and a cantaloupe and the squeeze pouches of fruit Ava likes. I guess I can make a thing of pasta because it doesn't really need to be refrigerated. We have chips and unopened salsa. We should have a case of water in the basement too. We buy at Costco and I drink a lot....but I think we've got a full one.

we just need to pull in the deck chairs and umbrella and move the plastic kids picnic table into the garage and hopefully move the sandbox under the deck, and take the swings off the set and put them inside too. DH is going to clean the gutters tonight or tomorrow morning.

  • since we are close to water table dh is making sure the generator works in case we need the sump pump to work.

i am buying a loaf of sliced bread, ground coffee (dh aka diva prefers whole bean coffee and i am not about to grind it a la JWOW, thankyouverymuch, and cereal.  I am buying toilet paper today only because there is a sale and this is when i stock up to the tune of 60 rolls.....

  • We live in an apartment in a basement.  It flooded bad a few years ago before we moved in.  They had to rip up floors and everything. We have pumps set up and stuff but if we get the rain we are projected to, we are looking at flood damage.

I have picked up just about everything I can and put it up high, but there is not much I can do about the furniture.  I don't really care about our bedroom set or the living room set, however LB's furniture is only a year old and they don't make it anymore.  I love it : (.  If water starts to seep in, I may have DH disassemble the crib and put it on top of the couch or something.  Ugh, just hoping for the best.

  • We have a well- so no power= no water.

I pulled out a few buckets last night to fill with water tomorrow and i'll be filling the bath tub up with water late tomorrow afternoon. We have plenty of candles and two flash lights- jay has three rechargale packs so ive been making sure they are charged and have batteries for the other. Tomorrow I need to somehow move our patio set in the garage and the plants.

My dad is at my house now finally fixing the flashing on our roof that has been giving us leaking problems. Everytime Jay has been off it has fricken rained so Daddy to the rescue.   I filled up my car today and will be hitting the ATM tonight for some cash just in case.

I'm waiting to hear if Jay will be called into work he is working til midnight tonight so he may just get held over, he said if that is the case, he wants me to go to my parents.

  • Outdoor stuff is now in.  I am in the process of filling up our 2 liter soda bottles we haven't returned with with water for cooking.  Already called the insurance company to make sure we have hurricane coverage.  Gas tank is full, took out cash, and will be taking pictures of the house before hand and uploading them to Kodak or another website just in case.  Living in the boonies of Binghamton for 25 years has taught me what its like to loose power for days.  I am not messing around.
