school lunch prices

I can't afford it anymore.  Lunches for my two in grade school is $2 each.  My highschooler's is a little over $5 each.  We have been informed that for our grade school to qualify for federal aide to give free / reduced lunches, we need to have a set rate of $2.46. Prices can be raised by no more than $.10 per year.

So we need to pay more so that others can have theirs for free.  (HUGE sigh).

Re: school lunch prices

  • Can't you pack their lunch? Jeez when I was in high school it was like $2 for lunch. I can't believe its that high now. Is this OPS?
  • Holy shitt, that's almost $200/month on school lunches.  I dont blame you for being annoyed with this.. dang!

Think of the awesome (and much healthier!) lunches you could pack them for $200/month.  I'd be making a point of doing that from now on..

  • Yowza!  I think I paid like $1.25 for school lunch both elementary, middle and high school.  This was a gazillion years ago though.

I would defiantely look into making their lunches.  Maybe get the kids involved by making a budget, list then helping shopping and making the lunches?

  • That is pretty high...but I know mine was over $2.50/day over 10 years ago.

$5/day is pretty frustrating for the quality of lunches served in most public schools (I'm assuming this is a public school?)

Amen.  The way I look at it is, pack a lunch... the food is gross and so not healthy anyway.  The change is part of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, making the cost of school food better reflect the cost of transportation for that food (all those semis shipping "fresh" food across the country) and the actual cost of that food as well as help with the cost of free or reduced meals.  Some kids ONLY eat at school--there only legit meals come from what is served by the lunch person.  That's incredibly sad.  We have to somehow make sure those kids eat, if it ups what I pay for Peyton's milk (she doesn't eat school lunch), then so be it.

  • This is private school I believe.

    Ours are $2.10/day for K - 5 and I think $2.30/day for 6 -8?  I think it went up 10 cents from last year.

Not sure on the HS, but if it's Private, I know most of them cater in lunches/do not have a hot lunch program.  Even when my sister was a Gross 10+ years ago I'm pretty sure lunch consisted of what you could buy out of the vending maching (back me up on that Michelle!!  :)

When my SS was at Skutt, lunch was catered in every day by Hy-Vee, Moe's, (when it was still around), Oscars, Fazolli's, some others and then once or twice a month it was a lunch provided by like the Home and School or something like that...and was probably $5/day for those places..no hot lunch program there.

The Catholic schools are also in compliance with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.

I went to Catholic school for grade school and they made all our food in the cafeteria but I know now someone else makes the food. They don't have restaurants cater in though. I always found that funny that schools like Gross and Westside would bring fast food type places in for lunch. Our food was dirt cheap and we had free breakfast if you wanted. I'd like to send my kids to Catholic school one day and would rather wake up early to pack sandwiches then pay that high.

This is such a great idea!

As far as the prices go, I think it shows more than anything how straight-up broke public schools are.

  • That is a pretty ridic high school price...I work at a high school and the teachers (who pay more because none of our meals aren't govt assisted like all student meals are no matter if its free or reduced) are only 3.50 or less depending on what they eat.  The students pay under 3 and the most expensive meal is of course the "healthier" option.  I do have to say my school is really trying to promote the healthy school options...we take turns in departments every Weds by taking classes outside to walk 45 minutes (I got in 6 and half miles this last Wednesday in 5 periods of walking) and also no regular soda, they can't buy candy bars in school anymore, etc.

    Ours are $1.75/day.

I also know Prep does the same thing as Skutt and I know Marian Moms does something similar during the month.

  • My kids are all in Catholic school.  My oldest is at Duchesne, and it is catered.  They have a fun lunch once a month.

My daughter would skip breakfast at home, go to school in the morning and buy a muffin or a bagel in the from their snack bar....big surprise when she got there this year....NO pop and NO muffins.  They are trying to go healthy.

I do pack lunches for the kids everyday.  It's just a little tough to get it done.  The younger two need to be in their seats no later than 8:00 am.  Our highschooler leaves home at about 7:10.  One of our biggest concerns has always been the nutritional value of the school lunches.

  • Can't lunch just be included in tuition?

(I realize this might be a really dumb question.)

Yes, this is true.  I went to Gross and it was pathetic!  All vending machines and maybe Blimpie or Runza catered on Fridays.  Healthy stuff there coming from a catholic school....
