Thoughts/ Opinions

My sister & I were discussing Neil Patrick Harris on Skype the other day. During the conversation, she said something about him being gay. I don't remember how it came up, but it had to do with the baby he has with his partner.
My 7 year old niece overheard the conversation & asked what gay meant. My sister's reply was 'very, very happy'. That kind of ticked me off. I think 7 is old enough for a simple answer like 'he likes boys instead of girls '.
WDYT? How would you respond?

Re: Thoughts/ Opinions

  • I would never say "instead of girls," implying that liking girls is normal or liking boys as a boy would be a deviation.

I'd say, "Not everyone is like Mom and Dad.  I am a girl and Dad is a boy and we love each other very much.  When people grow up, there are men who love men and women who love other women.  Sometimes, they get married just like Mom and Dad.  You may hear adults refer to those types of relationships as as "gay."  Gay also means being very happy.  And not every family is like ours - some families have one mom and dad, others have two moms or two dads, and some families just have one mom or one dad.  In any case, they are all very happy and love one another very much."

  • Personally, I agree with you. I would not have given my kid a bullsht answer, I would have told her the truth in a kid-appropriate way. No need to go on and on about it to a 7 year old, but I think it's silly to lie.

I didn't mean 'instead' in a negative way. A male /female adult relationship is all she's witnessed (as far as I know). I used 'inatead' to compare. Like 'she likes veggie burgers instead of hamburgers'. There's nothing wrong with liking veggie or hamburgers. Just a preference.

I like this explanation. I believe that we need to teach from a young age a gay relationship the same way we explain family relation difference and husband and wife.

  • I agree that your sister's explanation completely sucks. If it were my sister, I'd have no problem telling her that, too, but then again, if she were my sister, she would also have a gay brother and the situation would have presented itself already.

With Lily, however, I haven't really explained it at all. I guess for us to explain it is to point out that it is different somehow, and I never want Lily to get that impression, kwim?
