Being A Teacher --- and kids in daycare

you know as a teacher you always end up judging parents, right?

Come on... all teachers do.

Not always in a horrible negative way - but you judge them for the lunches they pack, or sending their kid in with a cough, or they annoy you by calling often - whatever...

It makes me so stressed when I send my kids to daycare because I wonder are they judging the lunches I pack? Are they judging that little cough P has but isn't sick? ughhh I wish I didn't know both sides! lol

Re: Being A Teacher --- and kids in daycare

  • I admire any parent who takes the time to pack their child's lunch (in our programs there is an option for the school lunch).  It doesn't matter what the packed lunch is, if the child eats it and is happy; I appreciate the extra time considered.  I don't see "the cough" as judging. It's more of a contagion thing.  If a child has a contagion ; it can spread to others.   It is the responsibility of the staff to keep everyone safe.  If anyone has a cough and constantly washes their hands and follows universal precautions to avoid spreading germs, then it shouldn't be an issue ( unless there is a fever or other signs).  btw, I <3 your siggy pic.

I beg to differ -- at school (work, that is)  we have hot lunch option and most kids receive that lunch, unless allergies or other things come in to play. I do however have a parent who consistently sends in a yogurt, chips, cookies and one other form of junk food for lunch.... I've had this child for 3 years already -- and she's a picky eater for sure, but there are things on every day menu she will eat -  so I judge that lunch. LOL.

Also, with the cough, I totally understand the contagion aspect -- but, for example, Paige suffers from mild asthma and allergies so she does cough sometimes but isnt' truly sick-- thats where I was going with the cough -- although there are many parents (where I work at least) whose kids come to school when they are surely sick and not suffering from allergies.

And... my kids are hams... that picture cracks me up! how's your little boy doing?? and big sis?

  • you don't need to be a teacher. i judge. my husband judges. it's human nature!

i'd like to thank the parent that sent in doritos for their kid's snack because my kid didn't know what that was before then. you couldn't buy an apple instead?

  • The teachers ain't the only ones who judge. Mini came home appalled one day because a boy in her class brought cookies in for a snack. She was all "Can you BELIEVE this? At 10 in the MORNING, Mom!" Shortly thereafter, there was a memo issued to remind parents that only healthy snacks were permitted. Starting this year they are no longer allowed to share cake etc for birthdays. They are only allowed to bring in a store-bought, labelled, and wrapped fruit or veggie platter. Our district is one of the last in our area to go through with this but it's still annoying.

But yeah, I help out at the school as much as I can but I know the teachers judge and do my best to act appropriately. Big Smile

  • yeah, when i think birthday celebration, i think baby carrots and celery sticks and packaged dip. Sad

i know - sometimes it was a lot of cupcake sin a short amount of time for several kids all celebrating....but i feel like they should cut the food all together - wear a paper birthday crown, sing to the kid, maybe the kid can be a special helper or something, and move on with the day.

In my school they don't allow any birthday snacks.  The parents can bring in a craft, game or read the students favorite book.  It is so much easier this way.

  • I have to be honest....I think society has gone a little bit overboard with the 'no sweets' thing for birthdays...My district has one birthday celebration per month for all the kids' birthdays that month.  The parents coordinate who brings in what.  I think this works nicely and yes cookies or cupcakes are usually included, not just carrots or fruit and I think it's ok for the kids to have this to look forward to once a month.
  • I'm sure K's teachers judge me at the daycare, but if she is within their policy of being at school (no fever >101.5, no diarrhea or vomiting), she's there.  cough, runny nose, whatever.....  if you don't like it, change your policy.
