WWYD: Hawaiian shirt for H?

H and I are going to a wedding next week that will be at a Seattle beach, and as long as the weather cooperates the ceremony will be on the sand.  The attire requested is "Beach Formal."  H wants to wear a Hawaiian shirt and khakis.  Do you think that will be okay or too tacky for a wedding?   And what kind of shoes should my H wear if he does wear the Hawaiian shirt?

If it matters, I'm wearing a navy polka dot summer dress and a cardigan with peep-toe wedges (with flip flops in my purse in case I need to switch shoes mid-reception).

jennuine and kinmir (and anyone else who had a PNW beach wedding):  What kind of outfits did your guests wear?

I would ask this on the TK, but that board is slow/dying right now.  TIA!!!

Re: WWYD: Hawaiian shirt for H?

  • Ours was at Alki at the end of May.  People wore casual dresses, khakis, polo shirts and casual button-front shirts.  I've seen some Hawaiian shirts that would look ok (not tropical flowers), but most would be too casual and too loud, i would think.  Linen or khaki pants should be fine.  Probably a light-coloured striped short sleeve button front shirt would be preferable.

  • CDMay:  Thanks for the advice.  Since the wedding is early September, and technically Autumn, a Hawaiian shirt seems so, "not good" to me.  I need to look at H's Hawaiian shirts again, to see how "loud" the prints are.

  • I hate 'Hawaiian' type shirts. I say your H should wear some khakis and a nice short sleeve button up but not a bright hawaiian shirt. The loud print CD talked about is what I envision... :(

  • I hate big floral prints, and H & I got into an argument last night about what he was going to wear next week (notice how I'm not calling him "DH" Angry).  He claims he'll be too hot in anything other than a Hawaiian s/s button-up.  So far this Hawaiian shirt fight is the stupidest fight we've had in our 3+ month marriage, Stick out tongue  And to tick me off even more, he wants to wear flip flops... (thus the shoe Q in the OP).

  • My sister had her wedding IN Maui, and her (now ex) H worse a really pretty soft blue Tommy Bahama Hawaiian shirt. Not all of them are ugly or loud. I've seen some decent "quiet" ones at Costco.

  • Well, Nordstrom has Tommy Bahama shirts (they can be quite pricey, though - FYI) that would look good for a beachy wedding. They're not too decorated and they would look good. HTH!

  • I hate Hawaiian shirts of any kind. But I'm kind of just that way. I think khaki or linen shorts would be fine too. As for the shoes, if he's wearing shorts, I don't think he should wear dress shoes, so maybe some dressy-ish flip flops? H has a nice pair from Aeropostale that he wears to church on occasion.
