SF ladies - need restaurant recommendations - and a traffic question

We're going to see some friends tomorrow night for dinner - they're at a conference in SF proper and staying in SoMa/Union Square area.

First, I need restaurant recommendations.  This may be a long-shot.  We're looking to stay at about $20 pp or less (not including beverages) and they like ethnic and seafood.  I'm okay with picking them up and driving somewhere, but I'd like to find reasonably-priced parking near the restaurant (free is better, but I'm not holding my breath).

Second, based on your experience, as we've always avoided it like the plague, what is the westbound traffic like on the Bay Bridge at around 5-6pm on a Friday afternoon?

Re: SF ladies - need restaurant recommendations - and a traffic question

  • Traffic isn't that great...lots of people going into the city for fun times on a Friday pm.  And if it happens to be Critical Mass Friday, it can be awful.

As far as restaurants go, I honestly can't think of any that would be in that price range.  Most would be about twice that....

  • traffic will be bad.  AND it's a Giants home game.  double bad traffic.  I suggest you BART in and meet them in the City.

If you must drive...and want seafood...I suggest Pacific Catch for that price:

If you are going to BART in, I'd do King of Thai (in Union Square) or Ananda Fuara (which is not "ethnic" but is quirky) in the Civic Center...or go to the Mission and do some DELICIOUS food there...I've been dying to try Gracias Madre...

  • Traffic will be a b!tch and there is not really affordable parking in the city. A restaurant in that price range will be tough too. There are some chain places in Union Square that may work - Cheesecake Factory, Buca di Beppo, etc.
  • Traffic will be slow.

About restaurants, not sure what you mean by ethnic, but I'll assume that to mean non-Californian, non-American food.

In Union Square, I'd recommend Katana-ya Ramen (one of my SF favs).  It's delish, within your price range, and in the area.  There isn't much good (and inexpensive) food in Union Square.

In SOMA, there's Pazzia (one of my favorite restaurants in SF), Mehfil (used to eat here a lot when I worked in the area), Koh Samui and the Monkey, Tropisueno, Tin Vietnamese (and there's another Vietnamese place that's really good at 6th and Market, but it's a really bad part of town), The Butler and the Chef (not sure if they're open for dinner), Primo Patio Cafe...  and I'm sure a ton others.  SOMA generally has a lot more and a lot better dining.

  • Ugh.  Thanks for the heads up on the traffic.  We moved our reservation time to 8pm just in case.  Our friends are more knowledgeable about the city than we are, so they made reservations at Cioppino's at the wharf.  Based on that, I guess taking a car will be faster (and cheaper) than BART and a cable car out there.  They have validated parking in a garage, so I'll deal.

    I appreciate all your help!

  • BART and bus would probably still be faster out to the wharf.  Or even BART and cab.
