Update on Interview Today

It went pretty well. It's always hard to tell. I felt like a did a little better last time but it was still pretty good, I think. It was a panel (which I didn't know it would be) and one of the interviewers (one of the VPs) was a tough customer. He was very young for an administrator and I'm sure he didn't teach for long. He talked a lot about their goals to raise their CST (standardized test) scores. He kind of looked confused by everything I said, which is always disconcerting when you're being interviewed. I shouldn't say he looked confused by everything I said but a few times he did. The other two were the social studies dept chair and a Freshman Academy (all the freshmen are in it) teacher. They have small learning communities for all the grades but 9th is all in one. Starting in 10th grade they can choose from things like Social Justice, Arts, Medical Academy, etc... The teachers on the panel didn't look confused about what I said (not coincidence I don't think) and seemed to like me.

I found out that the Freshmen Seminar I would teach is like AVID (which I used to teach) but it isn't AVID specifically. It's goal setting, career/college prep., study skills stuff. I don't know if they have a developed curriculum for it or if I would have to make it up. I'm sure my AVID background is one reason they're interested in me. The 10th grade World Hist classes I would teach have had a sub until they find a permanent teacher. So I would be starting where they leave off. They'll have been in school for 3 weeks by the time I would start. So this all could be a ton of work esp. considering I've not taught World Hist before. But of course, it's a job so if they offered it to me, I would take it. We'll have to see. They said they'd contact me by the end of next week. That's later than I thought it would be. So I may try to get stuff together in this week in case I get it. Save myself scrambling later. Hopefully it won't be in vain!

  • Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you, Hannah!

And how is Drew doing, by the way?

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • T&Ps headed your way.  I'm shocked they're dragging their feet considering they've already started, but I see it as a good thing that they really care about finding the right fit for the postion
  • Good luck, Hannah!!  I hope they realize how lucky they'd be to have you!!
  • Sounds promising! I hope it works out!

Maybe they said you'd hear by the end of next week to give them some wiggle room should they have two close contenders for the position. Or even just to manage your expectations and to keep you from calling them a bunch in the beginning of the week. Hopefully they realized they liked you pretty quickly after the interview, and will be calling earlier in the week instead, so you don't have to wait on pins and needles.

    Fingers crossed for you!

  • I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
  • Good luck!

When I interviewed for the job I had now, I thought that I BLEW it in the panel interview because I couldn't recall the job description correctly and fudged some stuff.  The interviewer looked at me like I was crazy, lol.  But it turns out they liked me after all. So I hope that admin's weird looks were just his own little quirk and that he really likes you.

I am keeps you in my thoughts, I really want this for you, H!

  • Oh man, I hate panels. It's hard to enough to try to impress one person as it is. I'm sure you did great and I'm keeping my fingers crossed/blowing dust your way for you. Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone! I think they want to wait to have the person start until after Labor Day. They may have more people to interview at the beginning of next week. I thought I was at the end of the group. I have no idea how many people they are interviewing.

ETA: I don't think I blew it I just wasn't as articulate at the beginning as I'd have liked. That tends to happen to me. Once I get going, I'm more articulate/less nervous/have warmed up. I was a little thrown at the start because the woman who set up the interview I thought would be interviewing me. And I didn't expect a panel. They had these dumb prescribed questions, meaning they were constantly writing and not having a conversation with me. I always get nervous from that. I think even though I don't feel like I did the best interview, I would match their needs well. So that means I would definitely be a contender.

  • I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you.
  • fingers crossed!
