Am I just naive?

Irene is just a hurricane, which will be a tropical storm by the time we get here. It will be windy and rainy. And then it will be over. I can't believe there's a state of emergency being activated.

And all the weather people say there will be nothing on the islands, yet they're setting up an emergency shelter on Nantucket.

I am so confuzzled.

And just to note, I've lived through a hurricane, in MD. So it's not like I'm from Nevada and never saw one.

Re: Am I just naive?

  • They are always overzealous and overly cautious when it comes to weather.  But I also think that they are taken extra precautions because this area doesn't usually deal with hurricanes.  I'm sure it will all be OK, but better safe than sorry.

Stay safe and stay dry everyone!

  • I feel the same way but now that I have small children I take it more seriously and make sure we are prepared "just in case".
  • Since we don't have hurricanes often, it'll be like when areas that don't get snow often get 1 inch and everyone goes into a panic. After Irene comes through, the news will show every single branch that fell and ever powerline that went out.

I also think the media just gets off on inciting mass hysteria. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe this storm will be horrible in MA... But I tend to doubt it.

  • i live on the coast and i had a leaf on my porch. thats about it. i saw a lot of trees and flooding but nothing horrible, then again, we left before high tide so i dont know what the storm surges looked like, but i tend to think we're fine. Ive lived in North carolina, i knew this wouldnt be horrible once it got to us. some werent so lucky though.
    Anniversary
  • Well, the storm stayed more west than it was supposed to, but I think meteorologists have a hard job.  They're kind of damned if they do, damned if they don't, you know?  I'd rather have them err on the side of caution than to tell us it will be nothing and have those 700,000 people who were without power at one point (and so many still are) or how had major flooding in/around their homes feel like they had no idea that was a possibility.
