Hello Ladies, I don't usually post on this board but I figured it would be the most helpful with a question I had.
I am looking for a new job, only married since October, and have only been out of college for 2 years. Therefore, everyone besides my current job knows me as my maiden name, not my married name. Some of the journalism work I did in college (that you can find on the internet) is also obviously in my maiden name and is on my resume.
My question is, do I put my maiden name on my resume as well? (Like in parenthesis?) Or do I just let them know that my name has changed (so if they call references they know who to ask for)?
My hubby says that I shouldn't say anything about being married because where I'm young they could think "she is married, probably going to have kids soon, therefore we shouldn't hire someone who might go on maternity leave soon."
Your opinions/thoughts/own experiences please?
Re: Married and Maiden Name on Resume?
I would put both maiden and married.
I disagree with your H's statement.
I put both because I was published under my maiden name. You can either put Mary Smith Jones or Mary (Smith) Jones, your choice.
Your H's comment may be relevant in some fields, but only you know if that's an issue in your field. People get married and have kids all the time.

yes, I would do this with your school, former employers etc.
on your resume I would put:
MARY MAIDENNAME MARRIEDNAME
for example just in case.
Thanks ladies!
I have never thought about updating schools and former employers.....do people actually do that?
I would use whatever name you intend to use professionally moving forward. If you're going to cite publications on your resume, include them as they were cited at the time. You don't indicate that you are seeking journalism employment and it's not clear how important those internet articles will be. Also, if you get to the point where they want references, you can tell them that they need to use your maiden name or you might not be recognized.
PS-Don't listen to YH. Employers are going to think that when you walk in the door with a ring on your finger too; is that going to stop you from wearing it? You can't help stupid. You can only do your best to be professional and perfect for the job. GL!
