Introduction

Hey. I'm a new military wife. I don't know really how The Nest works but we introduced ourselves on The Knot so I figured I would here. Military life is interesting to say the least. Right now we are living in a hotel since H only has about a month left at this base before we go back to our home state for a few days and then head off to the next base. Any advice for finding a house off base? The on base housing is not very good at this base from what we hear. Am I allowed to say where we are headed? I am so new to this, but I don't want to say anything that I'm not supposed to. Anyway, if you want to know anything more just ask. :)

  • Welcome. You can choose to share as little or as much as you feel comfortable. Just keep important things private. If your screenname is your last name you may want to create a new one. Not really good to have your first and last name out there. I'm J and my H is AD AF. We live in MT. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats. No kids just yet, but working on that. ;) Both times we found our off base housing we went through and online website called ahrn.com. It's open only to military and both times we have been happy with the houses we chose to rent. Especially since we chose them before we ever saw them in person! Depending on your area or what your looking for you can use other resources.

  • Hey, I think I remember you from TK.  You can say where you are headed if you are comfortable with it.  I probably wouldn't give a street number or anything but a town or general area is okay.  If your screen name is your full name I would change it though (I don't think it is if I remember correctly).  As far as finding a house off base a lot of rental agencies have listings online.  I'd probably start there.  It might be helpful if you know someone from that area who can tell you about good/bad neighborhoods.  I know when DH had verbal orders to Jacksonville, FL we knew there were some bad areas and chose not to look there.  We never ended up in Jacksonville as DH requested to stay in the desert instead so other than that I'm not real familiar with a real PCS as DH PCS'd less than a mile to his new job.

Anyway, welcome. I am Sam, DH is AD Navy and we're stationed on a Marine base because he has an operational billet.  We have an 8 month old german shepherd named Happy and I am applying to be a health care administration officer in the Army reserves.  No kids now or in the near future.

    Tell us more about yourself.

  • We are headed to Camp Lejune after his current base. I am a little scared because a lot of the people that we have talked to about it have said that the base and the area are not good. Have any of ya'll ever lived there? I have looked online at houses and have talked to a Century 21 agent but she hasn't really said much. We are hoping to go up there and look around on a long weekend or something.

H is AD Navy. He is a corpsman and is stationed with Marines. I am still in college and plan on being a labor and delivery nurse after I graduate. I'm hoping that will be a job that can be easily found while moving around with H. We won't be having kids for a while unless we just get surprised. We do have a furry baby. Her name is Izzie and she is our $200 cat, as H likes to call her. Even though its not really true.

  • I have a friend who just got out of the Marines who lives there with her H.  She loves it.

  • Everyone has just told us it's really boring, but my whole life I have lived at least 20 minutes from any entertainment so I think we will be just fine. We looked online at the floorplans for base housing and they are gorgeous, but H is only an E3 so its a little harder for him to get an on base house. So we just decided to find something off base. I am looking at the website mentioned above and have had good luck with it so far! we are hoping to live in Jacksonville so that H doesn't have to drive far to get to work. It makes me feel better that its not as bad as everyone has said it is.

  • By the way Sammy, your German Shepard reminds me of my dog (she lives with my parents). She is really a mutt but looks just like a German Shephard and I love her so much! your picture makes me miss my baby. I love dogs! I hope we can get a fenced in yard so we can get one when we move.

Housing isn't bad on Camp Lejeune.  They are actually building more new houses.  There is some older housing, but they have been renovated or they are in the process of replacing it. I currently live in the area, we have a house that is a year old and we have a huge yard for our dog.  There are nice places out in town too, you just have to look.

Let me just say this, any place you move it's what you make of it.  So if you come in with a bad attitude you will end up hating it.  If you come in with an open mind you'll find that there are many things going on in the area. I like the area, there are lots of festivals at near by towns and in town.  The people of NC are very nice, the people of Jacksonville are ok.  I say that because Jacksonville really isn't like the other NC towns.  It doesn't have the Southern feel because of the transplanted military.  It does have a young feel from the young Marines, but I guess I don't notice it that much because I don't go out much in Jville.  I like to go to Wilmington and New Bern.
