Just wanted to share this for everyone else who had an epidural... TMI...
Wednesday I was coming down with a stomach bug. I was nauseated all day. I got Landon home from day care and laid him down for a nap. About 6pm I had a sudden urge (fever/heat waves/sweating/paleness) to throw up, so I did. While I was on the toilet, my legs went numb. I fell to the floor thinking that it was because of my position, but then my arms, lips, tongue, and stomach went numb. My hands were paralyzed and drew up to my chest. I was home alone with Landon.
I called DH to come home, and by the time I hung up I thought I was having a stroke (the right side of my body was more numb than the left). I called my friend Valery to come over (she was closer than DH), and then called 911. By this time my hands were so bad that it took me 5 minutes to get the phone open and push the buttons. I could barely crawl to the door to open it for the paremedics, and even then I had to use my elbows to turn the lock.
They took me to the ER and did all sorts of tests... EKG, blood panel, blood chemistry, kidney function, urinalysis, pregnancy test, etc. All were fine. My BP was fine and 02 stat was 100%, but my pulse was 145.
After fluids and 2 hours, I was fine. They said it could have been hyperventilation (which I doubt because I wasn't worried about anything when it started).
The doctor also asked if I'd had a lumbar puncture recently, so I mentioned my epidural. He said that sudden numbness and paralysis (temprorary) are long term side effects of epidurals. I knew that, but never thought it would happen to me.
Just wanted to share incase this happens to you. And by the way, if there ever is a baby #2 I will still be getting an epidural.
Re: Scary Wednesday
Holy crap that's terrifying. I am glad you were able to get help there so soon and that Landon was safely napping in his crib!
I had two epis and a spinal - eeks.
All of this, I had an epi and a spinal too and had no idea this was a side effect ... I'd like to continue to stay naive.
