Preparing for Irene

What have you done / are you planning to do?

Re: Preparing for Irene

  • I'm picking up a $5 pizza from Paisano's in Tyson's on the way home. :-) YUM!

We're getting laundry done, filling bath tubs, charging our camping lanterns, and filling our ziploc containers with water to make ice chunks.

I got 5 gallons of water last night at Giant. Target was already sold out. I also picked up a 3-pack of unscented candles -- they're near the frames/lamps section for the cheapies -- and a pack of propane for the camp stove.

I didn't buy anything we wouldn't use this fall/winter in our camping/hiking adventures.

  • Earlier this week when doing my regular grocery shopping I picked up a few jugs of water, extra batteries and lighters.  Oh, and some boxes of cereal for non perishable food.  That's about it.  We're in Loudoun county so the worst that will happen to us is an extended power outage and some wind.

  • We didn't make any preparations before Isabel. You couldn't drink tap water for a while and we didn't have power. So this time we're making sure we have something to drink and a way to cook if we don't have power...and clean clothes since we're behind on laundry. :-)

  • Nothing. We lose power on a pretty regular basis, so we're already prepared for that. We have enough food to get us til next Friday, and then i'm going OOT... so we'll be fine.

I am plagued with a first world problem though.  My car only has 1/4 tank of gas, but we're 90% sure we're getting a new car on Sunday (if we have power?)... so i'm trying to decide if I should at least get enough gas to get me to 1/2 tank or just wing it.

  • We bought some bottled water and batteries (all of our flashlights were dead and we had no batteries at home), and refilled our propane tank (which was low anyway).  I also bought a loaf of bread in case we want to make sandwiches if the power is out.  That's about it in terms of purchases; we have plenty of food to last for a while, if needed.  As for other preparations, we'll fill up the bathtub with water and bring in a lot of our patio furniture, planters, etc.

We were at both Harris Teeter and BJ's in Arlington yesterday evening, and both places were a zoo.  They were out of gallon-size water bottles at HT, and almost out of D batteries at BJs (I guess that is a common flashlight size).

  • We have the works.  DH is former military so we are always prepared.
  • We already had flashlights and batteries. DH was supposed to go out this morning and get bottled water, ice, bread, and some other non-perishable food items, but I have no idea if he actually got anything.

ETA: He managed to get everything except water, which was sold out, so we're going to fill up our empty water bottles (we have a ton of them), bathtub, etc. and hope for the best. We are also stocked up with wine. :)

  • Bottled water (which we have anyway, since we can't drink the tap water normally), wine, liquor, bread/ sandwich stuff, new tank on the grill (which we had run out of anyway), batteries, and my husband filled up my truck with gas yesterday, and a new bag of dog food for the puppy.

This! We have MRE's to last us a month and about 15 gallons of water.

I picked up some soups, tuna, bread, and pop tarts/cereal bars this morning.

  • Done: have bottled water, cheese puffs, magazines and books to read if the power goes out

Need to do: buy more beer and bread, buy dog food

Other than that, I'm not doing anything else to get ready. I feel like I have the essentials.

  • We filled our cars with gas and bought water, batteries, canned goods and a non-electric can opener last night. We have plenty of copies of our prescriptions, etc.

We're planning on bringing all the stuff we have outside (plants, porch furniture, badminton net, bird feeders, etc.) inside tonight, and filling the tubs with water just in case.

    Good times!

  • I'm thinking that it'll probably be fine but cooped up w/out power with a 1-year-old for 3+ days sounds bad enough without having issues re: food, water, sanitation, etc.  So, I'm preparing to have as comfortable as possible power outage!  ;)  We've already got a pretty good stocked pantry.

Done: water, shelf-stable milk for sprout, a few extra can goods, charging all our batteries, extra candles, extra flashlight, new toy for sprout (will be saved for future road trip if not needed now), library books for me

Need to do: instead of eating leftovers tonight i'm going to cook what i was planning on making Sat. night.  it's easier to reheat than cook (we have electric stove/oven).  get some cash, fill all our pitchers/carafes with water, clean & fill bathtub with water, get ice, freeze gallons of water, bring inside anything that can blow away, take out things that are in the fridge but don't NEED refrigeration (like fruits/veg/unopened salsa, salad dressing) so that we don't have to open it on the first day. maybe get some additional beer, too!  i'm contemplating making coffee & putting it in the fridge too.  Not sure if that would be better reheated than instant coffee (which I've only used for baking...)

I'm supposed to work on Sunday & part of me is hoping that we do get the storm so I don't have to go in.  I know that this makes me a terrible person...

  • Honestly we're really not doing anything.  I went grocery shopping to get some bread, peanut butter, carrots etc.

Oh and I'm making sure the charge my nook/iphone/ipod etc so that IF we do lose power I can at least read!!

  • I wasn't going to do a whole lot, but after reading the above posts I'm going to:

    - buy bottled water if I can find any; if not, then fill up empty containers

    - get our usual amount of cash out tonight (normally don't do this until Sunday)

    - make sure our cell phones are fully charged

    - move plants closer in, maybe indoors if it gets bad

  • Can I ask a stupid question? Why do you fill the bathtub? So you can clean yourself? Isn't the water going to be freezing by the time we use it?

You can use it for pouring in the back of the toilets to flush, in case water isn't flowing to your house.  In a real emergency you could drink it, wash with it, etc.  The idea is that water lines could get damaged so either a) you may not have water to your house or b) the water that's coming to your house is not drinkable.

  • Filled up the cars with gas, filled a couple big stockpots with water, filling the bathtub right now, bringing our plants in from the patio, DH is going to buy some non-perishable food.  He tried to buy a little propane stove, but Walmart was already sold out of them last night.  We already had a ton of candles and some flashlights, so I think we'll be good on that.  Unfortunately we can't board up our giant windows because we live in an apartment and the apartment complex is doing nothing, so I'm a little concerned about that.

unless you're on the coast, i really, REALLY wouldn't be concerned about that.  The immediate DC metro area's greatest threat is power outages.  Truly. If you're got water, canned goods and a light source, you should be good to go!

  • Just wanted to say thanks to the Nesties again - you put together a great supply list and to-dos so I've followed your advice. Good call on the shelf-stable milk, Kastle!
