Weekend Plans: Hurricane Edition

Where are you? What are you doing? What have you done to "prepare"?

Re: Weekend Plans: Hurricane Edition

  • Since we are in New Rochelle, it looks like we could get hit pretty hard.  I am uploading pictures now of the house to Snapfish just in case anything happens we have them for insurance purposes.  We sandbagged by our trouble drainage areas, all the outside stuff is in, air conditioners are out of the windows, filling empty 2 liter bottles up with water, car has gas, wallet has money, cat carrier is together just in case, plenty of food (I went shopping Wednesday before the madness), found all of the flashlights, batteries, candles, matches, etc.

Now only if my neighbors would get their acts together.  I swear if their plastic chairs hit my house I am shoving my foot up their a$$es.

  • I am in lovely Wrightstown, NJ. Why you ask? Oh because we were on vacation in LBI and forced to evacuate. So we're staying at a friend's house hoping to be able to get back to the beach by Tuesday.

I'm terrified for my real house since we live on a mountain surrounded by trees. Last fall we very kindly asked our neighbors to take down some of their trees because they're half dead, and will likely fall right onto our house, but since they're not close to their house, they didn't. My parents went over yesterday and brought in all of our patio furniture, planters, etc. and asked a neighbor to call them if anything significant happens.

  • all outdoor items have been secured or taken inside. half the garage was moved to the basement so both cars could be parked inside.

we have a battery radio, flashlights, the phones and ipod are charged, we have snack foods and juice boxes. dh filled the tub with water in case we need it to flush the toilet. i truely don't know about these things.

a section of the basement was set up with a table and some games.

my neighbor had a tree removal service at their home this morning!

i'm doing laundry and we're having lunch while watching Nemo

  • got my hair did this morning- it's pretty much a guarantee when i get my haircut (it's the only time i ever straighten it) that it will rain.

tomorrow is a friend's wedding- in new jersey!  as far as we know it's still on.  but we know of some people who arent going.  it's sorta in north west jersey, so that area might not be hit too bad.  but to get there you have to go thru some towns known for flooding- so who knows.  the original plan was to go to mom's in bergen county today, sleepover, she'd watch sue and we'd go to the wedding.  but i have no desire to go to my parents since there is a chance we wont be able to get to the wedding and then to get stuck at mom's for possibly days- possibly without electricity.  anyway, we'll see how bad this storm really turns out to be and make a judgement call tomorrow.

as for preparations, we tied our outdoor furniture to the deck.  just in case.  i didnt want a chair toppling over into our sliding glass doors.  im more worried about trees though.  we have a giant tree right oveer our house and much worse came down in the tornado a few weeks ago.  im just hoping it's a bad rain storm.  the one thing i wanted was a camping lantern in case the lights went out.  and they were sold out of both walmart and kmart 2 days ago.  so oh well.  i'm not looking forward to the possibility of entertaining a toddler without electricity.  our electricity went out for a day and a half last month and that was a PIA enough.

  • I went to the bakery outlet yesterday and got 3 boxes of entenmann's (chocolate chip cookies, fudge cake and Louisiana crunch). Also stocked up on fresh fruit and fresh bread. I took 3 books out from the library.

DH stocked up on water and Gatorade. He did some landscaping last week, so he covered it up with a tarp and did the usual securing stuff around the yard

We have a well, so if we lose power, we lose water. (Planning to fill up washing machine so we can use that water to flush the toilet.  We have no bathtubs and only one small sink due to the remodel, so we're not bothering with that).  We'll prob only stay put for a day in those conditions.  My Dad has a generator in Rockland, so we'll head down there with the dog if it's a worst case scenario.

     Stay safe, ladies!

  • I'm in Hartsdale, and we're not too too worried about our house flooding since we live on top of a huge hill, and our driveway slopes down towards the street. But we did bring in any loose items that may blow around, We brought in some of the patio furniture and are going to be tying down the rest momentarily.

We have flashlights, and I'm about to gather up all our candles, lighters & matches to have in one spot. We don't have a ton of extra batteries so I'm hoping we don't lose power for too long. Cell phones are charged, cars have gas, and we have cash.

We are basically bunkering down the rest of the weekend, and if we lose power I guess we'll be playing games by candlelight.

    I hope everyone stays safe!!!

  • I went for brunch with a friend this morning at Cheesecake in Palisades and did a little shopping... a lot of stores were closed.  Gap had 50% off entire purchase so I scored a 70$ heavy wool sweater for 35$ I really couldn't miss out on that.

B went to work this morning to move stuff away from the windows with his Dad and he just got home phew.

We're staying home and I have lots of wine... charged my kindle and phone... luckily B is more serious and took in some things from outside and is gonna fill up the bathtub... filled up our gas tanks... got some cash?  I didn't even know this fill up bathtub concept... I really wouldn't survive on my own, I could never go on Survivor that's for sure! I did food shopping on Thursday, got lots of food but in the fridge not enough non-perishable items whoopsss.. I'm going to make chocolate chip cookies soon. We can live on those.

My MIL left a freakout msg on our answering machine specifically for me (probably becus B and his dad were blowing her off when they were trying to secure paintings) but uhmm I'm not calling her back cause she'd be a biotch about my personal lack of concern (don't worry it won't bite me in the @ss B has enough for 5 of us)

We're catching up on Entourage so we'll probably do that until/if power goes out.

    Stay safe everyone!

  • My husband thinks we are all crazy and thinks its going to be nothing, but he is entertaining me. We brought it the patio furniture/grill that we could. Yesterday my dad swung by the house and moved my patio table under the deck while we were at work. I have a bunch of buckets pulled out for water and will be filling up the tub.  We have a well too and no power means no water. I pulled out all the candles and matches. We have like two flashlights and the one good one is powered by those chargeable battery packs, so i've been making sure those are charged up. I took in all my plants and american flag.

I also did all my laundry and cleaned the house this morning b/c i decided to skip it last week, oops!

My parents live about a mile away and they have a generator so if we are out of power for long, I'll be emptying out my freezer into theirs (thank god) and hanging out there so we can shower and such.

  • this morning we were planning on going to my IL just in case. i was having really bad braxton hicks last night that were increasing with pain they eventually went away and we decided to stay home. im feeling good and i want to get some cleaning and things done here. we went for lunch at posa posa and heading to stop and shop.

they had a pretty good stock of food left (i scored halloween candy for snacks!). people are rude and freaking out. some lady (who was running like a mad woman around the store) yelled at me because the guy infront of me wasn't moving quick enough.

we brought in stuff from our deck soo my dining room is nice and messy. i am about to reorganzie the closet to put the rest of the baby shower gifts away and finish up some laundry. dh and i plan on eating dinner at home and catch up on entourage tonight. i plan on making a pasta salad with grilled chicken just in case the power goes out we have some food for tomorrow. i am also planning on writing my thank you notes out for the shower and get them out on monday morning.. we have candles and flash lights and i plan starting "the help" if i get bored.

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3<br>
  • I didn't do any special grocery shopping but did fill up a few gallons of water.  We also have some unopened juice and enough canned food and cereal for a few days.  We'll eat everthing from the fridge first if the power goes out.  I'm hoping the freezer will hold for a couple of days of no power -- it's packed full and I lowered the temp last night to -6, which is as low as it goes.

We have done all of the other usual prep stuff.  Some of our neighbors haven't bothered to put anything away from their patios -- if someone else's sh!t comes flying through my window, you better believe they're paying to fix it.

@Holler -- that's a good idea about the pictures.  I should load mine all up to FB to have them, just in case.

I saw it on the news the other day and the light bulb above my head went off.

  • We are still here at home and are staying put.  We have flashlights at the ready, plus extra batteries.  I made a huge pot of lentil soup yesterday that will get us thorugh in addition to deli meats, bread fruit, snacks and pb&j if we do lose power. I also have several 8 oz. boxes of shelf stable milk for G is case we lose power for too long and lose the fridge stash.

The biggest and most challenging task is just keeping G entertained in our tiny place for such a long stretch.  Cannot wait for Monday!!
