birth announcements

So I have a question for you ladies. I wanted to order birth announcements until I realized how much money I would be spending lol. Do you think it would be weird/tacky if I made my own and mailed them out. I love doing crafty projects. Im not sure yet how ill make them but Im going to try while sitting home watching the hurricane :)

Re: birth announcements

  • Not tacky at all! It's a great idea!

  • You can google for super discounts off of shutterfly and snapfish. It makes them less $$. If you didn't sign up for the similac program I think you get 20.00 from shutterfly if you sign. up. (People will barter you for the checks so it's worth it even if you nurse or don't use Similac)

  • It sounds like a nice idea, but if you do decide to go the traditional route, one much less expensive option is to go on etsy and purchase a jpeg and have it printed inexpensively.  My friend Nicole does great work

I think she charges $15 for the design and sells you the jpeg so your only additional cost would be the printing - you print it as a photo - so like off of walmart or shutterfly or something.

  • ours are "homemade" - dh created them in photoshop. we designed it together, i took the photo to include, he did the graphic work.

we uploaded it to shutterfly or costco to print as photos. i purchased blank envelopes in pink to mail them.

it was fairly inexpensive this way, since it was 5x7 prints and envelopes in bulk.

  • I don't think it is tacky at all.

I can tell you that I did do the etsy thing for my daughter's first birthday invitations and it worked out great.  It cost about $14 for the file and then I printed on my own.

But to be honest, I think making something on the computer is just as fine!!!

  • thanks so much ladies!! I figured with the storm coming I can try some designs and I'll check out the etsy site. Thats a really good idea :)

You might also want to try Etsy. G's birth announcement was $15.  We chose a design we loved from a seller, she added in our pics and text and sent us the digital file in a 4x6" format.  Then, we had 50 of them printed at Sam's club photo lab.  Including buying envelopes and the design fee, they ended up costing us less than $30 and were beautiful!  Well worth it!
