My continued blabbing about the hurricane

So the mayor of Cape May (the southern tip of NJ) told people today that anyone who decides to stay in their town should leave a 3" x 5" index card with their name, DOB, SS# and next of kin on it in their shoe.

Scary, scary stuff.

I hope it is just a scare tack to get people to leave.

How are the NC ladies doing so far?  Please everyone check in.

Re: My continued blabbing about the hurricane

  • That's scary, one of my friends had plans to head to the shore this weekend and as of 2pm she still thought it would be good to go for tonight only, but we talked her out of it.

Right now all is calm, except for the stores and traffic, so not looking forward to the weekend.

  • Since the storm is losing intensity, probably more people will decide not to leave. But there will still be significant flooding along the coastline, which is dangerous. For the people who do leave, the longer they wait, the more dangerous the roads will be. I think he's trying to scare people into getting out early.

That's about what Bloomberg said:  Even though it's a mandatory evacuation and failing to evacuate is a misdemeanor, we're not going to go banging down doors to find people and no one will be charged.  But just realized that if you don't leave and have to call us for help, it's YOU who are putting our emergency workers' lives in danger.

I actually think that's a pretty fair statement.

  • We are fine here in charlotte, not seeing any effects. in wilmington the in-laws already lost power at 10:30pm and its not even supposed to hit them until the AM!

I agree, but it's not like this is the next Katrina. I believe she's been downgraded to a category 1 now. Katrina was a category 5. There's a big difference.

Very true! I think they're trying to scare people into evacuating, but really they're just plain scaring everyone!! That's pretty extreme for a CAT 1! My Mom and I were talking about how hyped up and dramatic it has gotten this morning. DH has some architects in NYC that were supposed to meet him in Cali tomorrow and they're all freakin out about it. DH joked around with them saying how he used to play outside in a CAT 1 when he was younger. They all laughed and said "typical FL response!" haha I do think it's funny how if it were hitting FL it would be NBD, but I guess when it's something you're not used to it's pretty scary and big news. I'm sure I would freak out if a blizzard hit FL! Lol I do think it's a good idea for people along the coastline to evacuate though just in case and I do hope that people are smart and stay inside, don't go surfing in it, etc! Hunker down and stay safe, ladies! And check in when you can :)

  • Oh and to maybe ease your mind a little... I remember getting hit by a hurricane one time and at the end thinking "geez, I've been in thunderstorms worse than that!" I hope Irene is like that for you guys!! Unfortunately, you just never know how these crazy storms are going to act... Hence, planning for the worst and hoping for the best :)

  • Yeah, there are two differences between hurricanes here & hurricanes down south, especially like Katrina:

    1.  We aren't as well-equipped for this.  We deal with hurricanes once every 10+ years.  I remember Floyd in '99 and the one before that was Gloria in '85.  So a blizzard in Florida is a good analogy.

    2.  The worry here, except for loss of power & some flooding, mostly, is more the shore towns than anything else.  We have too many houses right on the beach.  The Hamptons arleady look pretty choppy and crazy on the water, and there are houses mere feet from the shore.  THOSE are the people who need to get out.  The evacuation areas are really pretty small.

At least they're making it as easy as possible, free tolls northbound on the Garden State Parkway, free outbound tolls on the bridges and tunnels going from NY to NJ.

So far we've had two heavy rains where I thought, "here we go!" and it turned out to be nothing.  It's not raining at all right now, though it's soggy out there.  At this point, my worry is centered 98% on power loss and 2% on the basement flooding.  We do have a landline phone that requires no power, just the jack.  We have candles & a flashlight, extra batteries & matches, and the air pump for the fish tank ready to go.  And non-fridge/freezer food.

    Geeked

  • While Texas does get hurricanes on the coast, we don't get much in Dallas other than the rain etc.  With that being said, when our schools closed down for 4 days because of ice back in February, I know people in the north thought we were nuts.

It's the same kind of thing though just different weather.  We aren't equipped for that here.  I hope the damage is minimal and no lives are lost! Stay safe ladies....no swimming!

  • Ya, I would totally freak at any snow related weather. My first winter at college in NW FL, I woke up to ice on my windshield. I freaked out and had to call my Mom to find out how to get it off. I had never encountered such things I'm S Fl, had no ice scraper or anything of the sort... Didn't even really know they existed because I never needed one. I'm sure you all would have gotten a good laugh!!

Seriously though, that's good they opened the toll roads for free! And I hope it continues to be a pretty uneventful night for you all! I'll be thinking of you guys and hoping that power stays on!!

  • Yea, we were watching the news last night, and there are 3 guys that are planning to stay there and ride it out. One of the guys said that he was asked to write down his full name and SS# down. I'm not sure if he gave up that information. Scary.

  • Kristen, you just made me laugh out loud - that's hilarious!  Growing up in NJ with 4 seasons, summers that get hot enough to be bad (though not like TX & AZ) and winters that get cold enough to be worse... it never even occurred to me that some people didn't have the same experiences.  First person I met who was like you was a college friend freshman year who was from Texas and had never seen snow before.  Our first snow - we went to college in MA outside Boston - she went nuts and made her roommate go out & play.
  • Oh, and yeah, still fine here.  So far, still have power & everything is good.  Lots & lots of heavy rain & some wind, but even the wind isn't really terrible yet.

Just heard on the news that 41,000 people in NJ are without power right now & climbing.  Fingers crossed that it's not me!

Don't worry, though.  If our power goes out, I figure I'll just end up getting in a lot of knitting & sex.  Wink

For sure! You know, people down here would benefit from taking hurricanes more seriously. But it's too routine for them...I would really like to have people arrested if they're in mandatory evacuation zones and they stay, especially if they require rescuing. Well, I'd like to not rescue them, but that's not very humane, is it?

Anyway, for inland, you're right. Your main concerns are power, water supply, and possible flooding (I hadn't thought of basements - we don't have those!). Y'all hang in there!

  • Just took Meg out on a leash & finally got her to go to the bathroom.  Now I've got a soggy but; a gust kicked up behind me and drove all the rain straight at me, soaking my flannel PJ shorts.  LOL!

I like this idea. Survival of the fittest, right?

Glad you NE ladies are doing ok, keep checking in!

  • It's a bust up where I live (20 min outside Boston)...Just rainy and sort of windy.

But awesome day to stay in my loungy pants and Ava is in her sleeper. :)

    May bake in a while...assuming I don't lose power.

  • Eric's been baking bread & made us French toast for breakfast with his homemade white bread.

We've got sun now.  I'm thinking of taking a shower in a little bit & taking a walk, even though it's still windy.
