Re: East coast MNs: hurricane preparedness

  • We are going out tonight to get some water and non-parishable food... and liquor. Our pets have more than enough food and supplies. I just went shopping for them a few days ago.

We still have to get our patio furniture into the garage. And I need to find a place inside for my plants that my dog won't pee on.

Really, I am not that worried about it. (Famous last words)

  • I've prayed that if Irene does turn and hit Charleston, that it totals my car that's sitting at the port waiting for customs. That way I get the insurance $$ and a new car.

Otherwise, we're pretty comfortably inland and I'm sure all we'll see is rain. T&Ps to the others who are battening down the hatches!!

  • We went to Bean's two-year check-up today and her doctor asked us if we were prepared. We've lived here for a couple years but the worst we've ever got from a hurricane is a couple bad storms. I feel like it's lulled us into not being too worried about it.

Maybe we should go pick up some of those Organic Valley non-perishable milk boxes for Bean though.

  • DH has duty Saturday, we went and bought some supplies Wednesday but DD and I are going to Newport News to hang out with family and the animals are going to our vet.

I'm just bringing my supplies up with me, East Coast ladies be safe this weekend.

  • I have food, water, moved everything outside to the inside, filled the car up, and got some cash.  Tomorrow evening, I'll be filling the bath tubs up with water.  Where I'm at it is just suppose to be high winds and lots of rain, but things can change.  I'm glad that we are further inland.  I'm staying put for now, but if I need to I am ready to leave with the furbabies.

Looks like I get to celebrate my birthday with Irene though.

  • I feel H and I are fairly well prepared with our back-packing equipment. We have a water filtration system and camp stove. I bought some canned and boxed foods today. I suppose I should go buy more fuel for the camp stove. Although we dont live on base anymore, living there prepared us well for living without electricity. We have candles/fire galore. I also have a case of bottled water that we would use up before breaking out the filter.

Good call on the outside furniture going in the shed. I will have to remember to do that. We are also planning a hurricane party w/ some of H's friends from work. It should be fun. I am not excited for all the rain that is going to make the stupid grass grow more. I hate mowing the lawn.

  • We finished restocking our kit this afternoon.  The mayor just called for a voluntary evacuation of flood prone areas, beginning tomorrow morning.  We're near a creek so we've chosen to leave.  DH and his brother are moving everything out of the basement and first floor to the upstairs.  We'll be going to stay with my dad who is on higher ground and not near any of the rivers.  We should be good there riding it out.  Stay safe everyone.

  • H is stuck out at sea on his ship as they evacuated the entire fleet.  We're really close to shore so I've packed up and I'm off to Richmond tomorrow.  I'm having a friend drive H's car down to Richmond too b/c our parking lot floods during a normal storm.  I'm pretty nervous about everything also as this is my first experience with a hurricane.  Stay safe everyone!  :)
  • I'm not worried about food or water.  We live on the highest point in South Jersey...literally we're on the very top of the hill.  I've asked T to just bring in the deck chairs and take down his hammock.  We have to get a flashlight...I couldn't believe we didn't have one.  I'm a little worried my mom's house or my sister's house is going to flood.  My sister just left for Vegas this morning too so we'll have to check the basement on Monday.  They both live in low lying areas and the water table is already high from the 11 inches of rain we've gotten this month.

  • We have food and water and all that jazz? my nerves are getting a little frazzled though since is suppose to be stronger than Isabel was?

  • I bought enough water, ravioli and cosmic brownies to last me a few weeks.

I also got a bunch of books from the library so I can be entertained should the power go out.

I'm kind of p!ssed. H called today- he's in port on a beautiful island while I hunker down for a hurricane.

  • We're ok on food and water and such. I don't think we will get much here in NC other than strong winds and rain. An excuse to stay in our pjs all weekend!

Uhh. Where in NC are you?

They've evac'd the outer banks and Jacksonville is under a hurricane warning and a curfew...

    She's at Bragg. We're west of 95.

  • Yeah, Jville is a bit insane right now.  Everyone is trying to get home, putting things away, or leaving the area.  So NC is not just getting some rain and wind depending on where you live.

Where I'm at I'll have between 6-10 inches of rain and 50-90 mph winds.  The county I live in and the county I am a few miles from and I work in are under a hurrican warning.  Onslow County and Carteret are going to be hit the hardest from what they have been saying.

Have you been lurking on the CL FB?

The entitlement and helplessness is astounding. I can't get over it.

No, I haven't.  I may have go there for some entertainment.  But it doesn't surprise me about the entitlement and helplessness.

I'm not sure if there is a similar system for other branches, but I would imagine so.

The Camp Lejeune FROs have been sending out messages that we are suppose to contact them if we are ok or if we need assistance, especially if our spouse is deployed.

  • We are in upstate NY getting ready for tomorrow. Mostly high winds and flooding, I think. How is LeJeune? My brother-in-law is stationed there, and we haven't heard from him since this morning.
