Piercing care help

Ok, so it's not so much of an aftercare question, since I know all the basics.

I repierced the cartilege in my left ear (the hole was still mostly open) about a week ago, and have a piercing stud in it from when I had my lobes pierced ages ago. It's still fairly sore. Does anyone know a faster way to make the inflammation go away and the soreness stop?

I clean it twice a day with antibacterial wipes, and leave it alone for the most part. It's not infected, it feels more like it's slightly bruised. It could be just irritated from me tossing and turning when I'm sleeping, but it's really bothersome. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Piercing care help

  • I'm trying to remember what I used on my ears when I had them pierced...what was it?....18 years ago?   Hydrogen peroxide maybe?  Don't remember.

Do you have  any kind of bandage on it?  If it's sore from tossing and turning, maybe you could put a few layers of gauze over it, then tape that in place while you sleep so it doesn't get caught on anything.

     And, maybe take some ibuprofen?

  • As long as you keep it extremely clean and leave it alone it'll be fine. I normally clean mine with salt diluted in boiled water. Try sleeping with your hand cupped under your ear, besides that there isn't much you can do for the time being. I've got several piercings and I always find ear piercings take a bit longer to heal as you would normally bash your ears a bit in your sleep.

  • This probably isn't very helpful, but I got my cartilage pierced ages ago and it took forever to stop aching. Aside from taking good care of it and trying not to touch it, nothing really helped except waiting. If your piercing there last time was relatively pain free, hopefully you are a fast healer and the ache goes away soon. I think it was about 6 months before mine completely stopped aching, and even then if I accidentally slept on it all night with an earring in the pain would come back for a few days. (I am a slow healer, my lobes took awhile too).

That part of the ear seems reluctant to take to piercing, or at least mine does. I had mine for about 7 years, and it closed up after less than 3 months of not wearing an earring in it.

Until it feels better, could you take a tylenol a couple times a day?

  • I would take an OTC antiinflammatory like ibuprofen or something. It should help get rid of the ache a bit and if the tissue is inflamed, it should lessen it some. Ice also works for inflammation
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try salt water, since I can't get hydrogen peroxide in stores here (believe me, I've tried!), gauze when I sleep and tylenol.

I pierced it myself about ... five years ago now? I only wore an earring in it for six weeks til I got tired of it, and then have left it alone since. I'm honestly surprised it was still open. It was only the skin on the back of my ear that was closed.

Can't remember how long it took to stop throbbing last time. I think it was around three weeks or so. My lobes stopped hurting around day 12. I've done almost all of my piercings myself. Two lobe piercings, cartilege and my nose. The first lobe piercings I had done when I was 7.

  • OMG. You pierced your nose yourself?  You must have a high pain tolerance.  I thought it hurt when I pierced my cartilage.  I can't imagine the pain from piercing your nose!
  • One more tip: stay away from roller coasters! I got my cartilage pierced on both ears several years ago and a week later I went to a theme park. Bad idea, ears got battered.

You pierced yourself? Ouch! I'm ok getting pierced but I can't inflict pain to myself, I wouldn't be able to push the needle through all the way.

I've got 3 lobe piercings, three cartilage, navel and (TMI) nipple.

I did it fairly slowly, with lots of ice afterward. A shot or two of vodka wasn't a bad thing at the time either!

No worries about roller coasters. I'm too chicken to go on any rides like that. ^_^

  • I thought about getting my nipple pierced at one point. Then I decided that it was a bad idea, since my boobs are so large. I'd probably rip out the ring while sleeping or something. Talk about pain!

  • Definitely don't try piercing your nipple yourself! lol That is the most painful piercing I have ever had. The first one wasn't horrible because of the adrenaline rush or something but the 2nd one hurt like a mofo!

Hahahahaha! Oh hellz no, I wouldn't be piercing it myself.

I did my labret once, but let it heal since DH didn't like it.

  • I'll be honest, once it healed it actually felt really great but I had to sleep with a bra to be comfortable. I got rid of it a couple of years ago.

  • Dude my cartilage still gets sore 12 years later! Tea tree oil is good for it, too.
