Calling out sick from work

Just wondering, how sick would you have to be to call out of work?

Earlier this summer I had a horrendous cold w. fever, sinus congestion, runny nose, sore throat. I had recently started a job and could not call in sick.  I toughed it out, took sudafed and tylenol and survived the plague after 12 days of misery.

Today I have a girl come in with HEMORRHOIDS demanding a note to excuse her from work.  Another woman last week was "tired" and wanted a note excusing her until Lyme results were available.  Can you imagine?!  I have the ability to write work excuse notes but some people amaze me with their ballsiness.I have to be an advocate for patients but I don't want to be a pawn.

Re: Calling out sick from work

  • i hate being sick and try to tough it out as long as possible with OTC medicine and i rarely complain about it. I have to be near my deathbed to call out sick, just b/c i hate doing it.

Back when all that swine flu was going around- I woke up on a Monday morning not feeling great but figured i had a cold since my DH had had one. I went to work and started to get worse as the day went on but it was our quarter close (i'm in accounting) and i had a test in my grad class that night- sucked it up through both things but by the end of the test/class I was beat. I went home (was still living with parents at the time) and was almost in tears with my mom saying how i didnt feel good and such, she took my temperature 104....She said you ARE NOT going to work tomorrow and will be going to the dr.  With that i called my boss and told them, thankfully they were understanding.  Then the dr's office proceeded to give me a drs note for an entire week off of work b/c i had swine flu. It was HORRIBLE. I was sooo sick and worked figured their crap out without me.

  • I essentially have to be on my death bed to call out of work - we (including my doctors) come to work and do our surgeries with just about everything from colds to stomach bugs.  This is pretty standard throughout the entire medical field.

The only time I called out of work was I had a fever of 104 and was actively hallucinating. I had surgery at 7 and couldnt get ahold of my coworkers to cover me, so I started to drive in.  Luckily, they got my messages, came and relieved me, and by 730 I was home sleeping.

  • Back in the day when I worked full time it was damn near impossible for me to call out sick. But if someone that worked for me was ill, I'd try to get their shift covered so they could get better and not contaminate the rest of the staff. This wasn't in the interest of being nice, it was because some b!tches would stay home in a hot second.

Now, it's tough for me to call out because I work alone a lot. But if my kid is sick and MH is working I have to stay home with her. Oh well. LOL

  • I knew that we were a tough bunch!!!
