POLL: Home Safety

1) Do you have a fire extinguisher, know where it is & how to use it?

2) How often do you change the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors?

3) Do you have an emergency kit?

Re: POLL: Home Safety

  • 1) Do you have a fire extinguisher, know where it is & how to use it? We have one. I think it is under the sink and I read the directions when we bought it... I'm sure I could figure it out in a pinch. The only problem is that you have to pass our stove to get to the sink so if we ever had a kitchen fire I'm not sure what we would do!

    2) How often do you change the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors? They're due. I've been asking DH to do it for a month at least (it's probably been at least over a year and I think you are supposed to do it every 6 months). He keeps saying he will but I suppose I'm going to have to pull the "get everything out and start to do it myself" trick so that he'll see me and do it. Sigh.

    3) Do you have an emergency kit? I read about this in a current magazine (Disney Family Fun maybe) and thought that it would be a great idea. However, the author said he spent probably $300 on it! I don't think we'd go to those extremes. Besides, when I mentioned it DH laughed at me.

I fully intend on buying our kids safety ladders and teaching them how to use them, designating a family meeting spot, etc. when they are old enough. Thankfully, I've never been in a situation where I've needed any of those things but I like to err on the side of caution. Ok, so I'm paranoid. Whatever. ;)

  • 1) Do you have a fire extinguisher, know where it is & how to use it?  No

    2) How often do you change the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors?  Not often enough

    3) Do you have an emergency kit?  Huh, no.  I mean we have flashlights and batteries and a radio etc but it's not all in a bag or anything.
  • 1) Do you have a fire extinguisher, know where it is & how to use it?

Yes, both my brothers are fire fighters, so it's required to be a part of my family :)

    2) How often do you change the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors?

Um, the smoke detector is on my dresser, without a battery. We keep meaning to fix it and put it back up, but um, yup. (My brother gave me an earful at Alex's party when he noticed, so it will be back up soon)

The CO detector is in the kitchen. It malfunctioned and we never replaced it. Bad, very very bad.

    3) Do you have an emergency kit?

    Nope

  • 1) Do you have a fire extinguisher, know where it is & how to use it? We don't, but I want to get one. We had to use the one in our apartment once, so I know how important it can be to have one.

    2) How often do you change the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors? Whenever they start beeping because the batteries are dying.

    3) Do you have an emergency kit? No.
