I feel like no matter how much milk I send with Ellie, one of the infant room people is always telling me how hungry she is and can I please send more...even though sometimes she doesn't finish it all. It's really annoying. That said, maybe I'm not sending enough. Ellie's 15 pounds and she eats one meal of solids a day, so I figure she needs 30 - 35 ounces per 24 hours. I nurse her right before drop off, and she's at daycare 8 hours after that...so I send 16 ounces.
This same woman was also harassing me to start solids, and is now harassing me to go up to two meals a day, even though she just started solids 3 weeks ago and the ped says two meals at the 7 or 8 month mark. I MAY compromise and switch her one meal from dinner to breakfast on daycare days, but that kind of irritates me, too. I'm just sick of having the same conversation with them all the time.
What do you think? How much did/do you send? Am I being stubborn?
Re: Daycare Q: how many ounces?
Marcus only ever ate 12 ounces in an 8 hour day, and I think 16 ounces sounds fine for a breastfed baby. The amount you send shouldn't need to increase as she gets bigger, especially if she is beginning some solids, since with BM the calories and nutrition change as the baby gets older so they don't actually need to drink more but are still getting what they need. Do you know how many bottles she's taking and how many ounces in each? Maybe doing more frequent but smaller bottles would help since BM is digested so quickly. Especially if she isn't finishing the bottles.
I'd be really irritated if my DCP was pushing solids at a pace that wasn't what I planned nor what my pedi recommended. I'd continue to be stubborn about it, and just tell her that you are following the pedi's recommendations and you will let her know when you are ready to add another meal.
I'm in this dilemma right now too. I don't know what to send, when their breastfed its not like we know what comes out of our boobs. Sam is (already) 15 lbs (-ish). I've been sending 4 4oz bottles and formula to mix half and half in case. This is from 9-4. When I picked him up yesterday he hadn't eaten since 1 pm and all the food was gone.
I think they eat more from a bottle than they do the breast. Even if its breast milk.
This.
Abe ws doing the same as Ellie at 6mo. 4 4oz. bottles and one meal during the day (supper). About a month after starting solids he dropped one bottle and I introduced breakfast and then lunch.
He did go through a few growth spurts where he was starving after bottles. Those lasted no more than a week.
Thanks, everyone. It's mostly this one woman in the infant room who is giving me a hard time. The thing is, she's saying that Ellie is screaming, and I know that Ellie only screams when she's gassy, wants to be held (and you're ignoring her), or she's exhausted -- when she's hungry she grunts a lot.
I'm going to try and stick to my guns on this one....
amazingly, this makes me feel much better, although I am retroactively sorry for you and Marcus.
