Irene Check-In

How's everyone faring?

Things are really starting to pick up here (we're about 60 miles inland) and our roof is already leaking in a few places. Sad  There are tornado warnings up for the counties on either side of our county.  I think it's going to be a long night.

  • We've moved down to the basement, there's a tornado warning up for our county.

  • We're pretty much in the clear now. We're West of the emergency line so all we really saw were strong winds and a few spurts of heavy rain. Still, I've seen a couple tree limbs down around town. I think a couple areas of town lost power.

That being said, our local weather channel has pictures up of some of the coastal NC areas and it doesn't look good. Whole adult trees were knocked over, taking the surrounding ground with it.

My parents now think I live in the danger zone. In one summer we've been hit with a tornado, earthquake and hurricane. If we get more than 10 inches of snow this winter I think people are going to start thinking the end really is near.

  • That really sucks about your roof. Ugh. Not cool. I am wondering if I should send DH up to the attic to check. But with all of the rain, our basement is starting to flood. I mean we have streams flowing down there. :-( I am PRAYING we dont lose power, because we need our sump pump to keep working. Its been a champ so far. I love that thing.

  • It's been raining all day, but the wind picked up in the past few hours. Dying down again.

Luckily I still have power but it's been flickering. My parents haven't had power most of the day so I'm thankful I decided to stay home.

  • I'm about as far from Irene as one can get (thankfully), but I've been thinking about those of you in Hampton Roads today.  I know you spent most of the day with Irene sitting right on top of you.  Hope you all are safe and sound.

Those of you getting the storm tonight/tomorrow are also in my thoughts.  Stay safe!

ps. SMW-That totally sucks about the roof and tornado warnings.  Man, you've gotten babies first earthquake and first hurricane out of the way in quick succession!

  • We're holding up. So far we've only had power flicker once. We have been getting a lot of strong wind and rain. That's about it.

  • Morning update: We survived. Our roof is leaking in certain spots, water got behind our deck and leaked into the basement (very minimally) but we've been without power going on 8 hours. We're now scrambling to find someone w/ power so we can move my frozen breastmilk to a working freezer. Sophia? Slept through everything and continues to sleep. This kid is fabulous. Brandie, how did you do? Power.still on? Basement still semi-dry?

  • Lamest hurricane ever! But seriously we did fine. The power mere flickered a few times. We got to listen to the glorious sound of the sump pump kicking on and off all night. I was kind of hoping it would be a doozie so I could say "I told you so" to H who was givinng me all sorts of crap for preparing everything...

Our basement was pretty flooded. But we never lost power and our pump is a miracle worker. It could have been a lot worse if we lost power. At one point our chiminey was dripping water too, that was crazy. But everything seems to be okay right now. Hoping we get to keep our power. I hear that 500,000 are without power here. Yikes. I love that Sophia slept the whole time. If you need a freezer, FB me.

  • Clicked on this board by old habit.....but just wanted to say I'm glad everyone is safe over there.  We are still in really heavy rain bands and the wind is just starting here, but otherwise thats it.....so far.  The roads in the area are a mess though, apparently really flooded and closed.  Stay safe, ladies....and I miss you!!

  •  We didn't get anything but a little wind and some rain.

  • I'm originally from Houston and when Ike hit, my parents were without power for 2 weeks Sad I'm praying the east coast can recover quicker than Houston did!

  • I'm ok.  I had power until 10am yesterday, and we were only without power for about 12 hours.  So in my area they have done a good job getting power up as fast as they can.  My internet was out before the power was out yesterday, and it back on this afternoon.

I don't have any problems with the house.  I will have to have our fence fixed in at least one spot.  I am very thankful that that is all that happened.  I did see a lot of large trees that were either broken or completely up rooted.  I did see some houses that lost shingles, siding or had trees fall on them.  I didn't venture out much besides my normal route.

There are still areas without power near me, and schools are closed tomorrow because of power outages and damage.

  • It's so gorgeous outside today it's hard to believe we just had a hurricane; until you see the downed limbs and trees and the usual yard debris.

Then there is my w-e-t fireplace because the water was leaking in through there all day long and we had to constantly empty out buckets of water. We wonder though if that was because we just had the townhouse leveled on Tuesday (yep, the same day as the earthquake) and that it caused some damage to the fireplace. Haven't even thought about checking out the attic. Probably should.

Fortunately, the longest we were without power was late last night for about 3-4 hours max.

  • I was out of state for it but my H reports zero damage to our house and he had power the whole time.  There's some flooding in the town surrounding the base I hear.
I don't want to be on MSNBC, yo.
  • My hometown (Western Mass) got really pummelled.  Flooding to levels I've never seen in my lifetime, roads taken out, businesses destroyed/damaged.  Thankfully I've not head of any fatalities, but there are a lot of people w/o power, water or a way out from their homes.

  • We're ok.  Today, my internet finally came back on.  We were able to get back into our house yesterday afternoon.  We got about 2 inches of water in our basement from the creek spilling over.  Our pump and sandbags really helped.

Our screen door was ripped off and blown around the corner.  DH found it in a tree.  I think that was possibly a tornado.  We were under a warning at about 11pm Saturday night.  They haven't confirmed a touchdown so maybe it was Irene.  Who knows.  All in all, we were pretty fortunate here.  Some of my neighbors who blew off preparing to get drunk are in a lot worse shape.  We're still dealing with a lot of road closures in the city, mostly due to downed trees and flooding.  Travel is a lot better today though so we should be back to normal pretty soon.
