Irene Check-in

How is everyone doing?

It's 11:15 here and it's getting nasty.  It's been pouring for a while and there is lots of thunder and crazy lightning.  It's so sick to think that the actual storm, the worst of it, isn't even coming until early early morning.

For anyone reading on FB I started freaking out at bedtime about Janie being in her own room (the only close tree is on her side of the house in a neighbor's yard).   I was full on panicking the more I thought about it.  We've successfully moved her before in the middle of the night so I grabbed her PNP and moved her.  EPIC FAIL.  She was running around the PNP, jumping, screaming "mama" "dada".  She knew exactly where she was (in our room).  After about 45 mins I finally caved, crying I asked DH what he thought.  He was sweet but was basically like "this wasn't your best idea".  I was like "I just wanted to keep her safe...".  He's like "i know, your heart was in the right place...". So, back into her room/crib she went, back asleep he went, and downstairs I went.  I don't think I can sleep.

Re: Irene Check-in

  • Been thinking about you.  Gosh, don't you love it when plans go as they're supposed to.  Hope you can get a little rest tonight.

  • Been thinking about you too as we've been watching the weather channel last night/this morning. We woke up to nasty weather this morning, but we're not really supposed to get the worst of it until much later today/tonight. ILs have a house down at the Jersey Shore, so we're waiting to hear back from them to see how they've made out. So stressful! And I totally would have done the same with Janie too. Glad she at least did go back down for you in her own room. Hope you were able to get some rest... Please let us know how you're doing this morning!
  • I have been through several hurricaines in GA, but I can't imagine one now with a baby. I freak out that the tree in the back yard will fall on Landon's room in thunderstorms. Ahhh!
  • Things are ok here, but I think the storm is still over your area, so we haven't gotten the worst of it yet. I woke up at 7:15 because of the wind and then lost power a few minutes later. It came back on around 8:30, so I'm hoping it stays on for a while. It's amazing how much we rely on electricity/cable!

Our basement is still dry, but again, the storm hasn't really hit us yet. I'm fully expecting the power to go out again, so I'm nervous about all the heavy rain we're supposed to get since we don't have back-up power for our sump pump.

  • Aww, been thinking about you too. Sorry moving Jane didn't work out so well, it's hit or miss with things like that. Like I said on FB I have the same fear when it storms here, there is also a large tree about 10 feet away from our house, that hangs over Zac's bedroom. The tree didn't ever bother me until we had a baby.

GAH! Being a mother is tough sometimes.

    Keep us posted!

  • I hope things are going well for those south of me. We're just waiting. We have a few hours before anything major should be up here.

  • UPDATE:  Our basement has at least 8 inches of water (never happened before).  Our sump pump had some sort of f&*^% system failure overnight.  We still have power so it should be fine.  The main pump failed on battery power and it went to the auxiliary pump with battery and it looks like that did what it could while the battery lasted but it was just too much.  All my neighbors have the exact same waterproofing system and their basements are all dry (yards flooded and sump pumps working non-stop, but dry).

My Mom was ordered to evacuate (she lives near a stream, but at the top of the hill).  She stayed b/c she has a dog and has nowhere to bring him.  Her house is fine but the stream at the bottom of her hill (and her way out of the neighborhood) is predicted to flood.

High tide here is at 11-something so everyone here is just waiting for that to see what else will happen.

My across the road neighbors have water in their basement with sewage(!) and they are under-contract to sell in like 2 weeks.  They are FREAKING out, as would I.

Given the number of downed trees and road closures I am SHOCKED will still have power.

That's all - can't wait for it to be over.  Jim is in the basement now putting bucket by bucket into our utility sink!

  • Its raining here and the wind picks up in spurts.  I'm worried about this big, dying tree we have in the front of the house.  I am also afraid that it will crash into the house and into the twins' room!  Luckily their cribs are on the opposite wall and we have a front porch that it would hit first (can you tell I have thought about this?)

Megan- sorry your plan with Jane didn't work well.  You definitely had your heart in the right spot.

We're just waiting here for the worst part to hit.  We already bathed all the kids and are doing laundry.  No power loss here yet.  I am also crossing my fingers that we don't get a lot of flooding because if we do, no school tomorrow!

School was already cancelled for us as of noon yesterday, so our first day will be Tuesday.

  • Big squalls of rain and heavy winds started an hour ago... Hoping this flies through quickly and leaves all the trees in place. I was supposed to travel for work tomorrow, but that won't be happening!!
  • Megan, OMG, 8 inches!  Is your basement finished?

We got the brunt of the storm overnight.  DH and I slept horribly. We were up about every hour checking our storm drain and basement.  We don't have any flooding, but there is water seeping in through our basement foundation, probably why our house smelt musty when it was vacant for 3 years.  I have the dehumidifier running.

We lost power for at least 6 hours, which is lucky.  My parents didn't lose power, so I asked Dad to bring up his generator.  As soon as he got it working, the power turned out.  That's after he tried his old one and then took apart and rebuilt the new one.  Oops, just lost power again...ugh, seems like it's going in and out.

I tried to let Winston out to pee very early this morning, before the wind died down, I swear he almost blew away.
