covered in mosquito bites - help!

Despite my best efforts to keep covered and/or use bug spray, I still managed to get eaten up over the weekend and am now covered in itchy red spots courtesy of dozens of blood-thirsty mosquitos. I have never had this many - and never had them be THIS bad!

I have them in places that weren't even explosed (bikini line (?!?!), lower back and bum!!) as well as my hands, knuckles, face, elbows . . .and they are itching like mad!!

So - what is your secret to treating bug bites?  Did you get a lot over the weekend? Do they seem especially bad this year??

PLEASE tell me I'm not alone in my misery!!

Re: covered in mosquito bites - help!

  • I got a few this weekend.  I would get an AfterBite stick - that always helps my itchiest bites!

  • I second the afterbite stick, it works pretty well.

  • I seem to be a magnet.  I could bathe in the bug spray and still get bit.  Through several layers of clothes too.  I'm allergic to them and end up with large red areas and welts that last about 1-1.5 weeks.  Over the years I've found several things that work.

No scented anything when I'm going to be outside.  No lotions, hair gels, sprays...

Use the bug spray with higher deet on my clothes only and try to keep covered by clothes.

If I get a bite:  I keep travel sized unscented deoderant with me.  As soon as I feel I bite I rub it on.  The active ingredents that absorb sweat, absord the saliva from the bite which is what makes it itch.  Put a layer on and wait about 10-15 minutes and apply a second layer.  I've found that the benedryl spray works really well on the bites if they're still itchy several hours later.  The pen version doesn't work as well for me.  And when push comes ot shove, I take benedryl - espeically at night or if I'm not driving my motorcycle.  You can also use cortizone creme on the bites a couple of times a day to help with the swelling and heal the bite area.

  • Take OTC Allegra allergy medicine.  You can take other forms but this is pretty strong and wont make you drowsy.  It also lasts 24 hours.
  • I tend to grab the regular hydrocortizone in the tubes by the antibiotic ointment for the stubborn ones that itch bad.  (feet ones are the worst!!)

Just curious though - if you have stuff on the bikini line - were you swimming at all?  Could you have gotten swimmers itch?

  • Thanks for all the recommendations and advice. I never thought to take allergy medication, but it makes total sense and I will be doing that tonight!  I have some hyrdrocortizon cream in my purse, but I feel like I could be slathering it on every 10 minutes and it wouldn't make a difference (plus, some of the worst bites are on my upper thighs - under my jeans, so that makes it difficult!).  It is crazy how badly they itch - and how big the welts are. I'm thinking some might be fly bites and that's why they are so bad this year. Ugh.

I was swimming, but I was also in short-er shorts while biking in the woods. At the time, I didn't think they could have gotten me (covered in spray as I was) but now I think they did. :(  Thankfully those aren't too bad and I didn't really notice them until this morning when I was shaving . . . and by then, I had a dozen other ones elsewhere that were taking all my itchy energy and attention!

Yeah, I was wondering if they might be chiggers.  Chiggers are THE WORST.

I feel your pain. I think one got stuck up my pants because I have about 8 bites in a 3x3 spot on the back of my thigh.  I wanted to bathe in benadryl today!  The above is what works best for me.  I think it's about $5 at Target or drug stores.

  • vinegar. put some on a wash cloth and press it to the itcy areas. It stings a bit, but offers immediate relief after that.
  • Also try a bath in baking soda water. It's a quick relief that I enjoy :)

That is the only thing that works for me.

  • Nothing works for me either.. and I swear they were biting me through my clothing because I have bites on my butt, back of my legs, stomach, on the tops of my feet.... all over. They itch like crazy and some of the bites have been bothering me for over a week now. :(

  • I get this stuff called StingStop - it's an ointment.  I think I've only gotten it at the Wedge.
  • They are HORRIBLE this year. I have no cures as nothing seems to help me. I got eaten Sun and Mon night but by the next morning they are gone.
