Re: s/o food shopping... a non-clicky poll
That's a lot of questions....
I don't mind food shopping, you know, because I don't want to starve.
I'm the primary and I go alone. DH is like a kid and I end up spending $50 extra when he comes with.
I usually write down the important stuff and wing the rest.
No budget, but the bill tends to be about the same everytime I go.
I shop at the only store in town, but look for deals.
I use coupons, but only on items I know I'll actually use. Most of the coupons in the paper are useless to me. I also use the stores rewards program - it gives Points for purchases to use towards money off gas, which is nice.
A little name brand, mostly generic with the exception of a few things.
We're Sam's Club members, but mostly just use it for H's shop/work purposes.
There's no delivery option around here.
Like Rach, how do you feel about food shopping? Love it? Don't mind it? Loathe it with a passion? I love it. I actually like meal planning, getting a list together, and grocery shopping.
Who is the primary food-shopper in your household? Do you go solo? Does your husband? Do you make it a couple's thing and go together? Or does it differ every time? I go solo. We'd spend 10x more if Scott was with me - he moseys and is slow and is always finding random things he things we need. Which of course we don't.
How often do you shop for food? I go weekly, either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Then hit up the farmer's market on Saturdays.
When you go food shopping, do you go with or without a list? Are you an all-at-once shopper, or are you more apt to buy things here and there, as needed? I always have a list, or I'll forget stuff. And I buy everything for the week all at once, same day. With the exception of the farmer's market.
Do you have a food budget? Kind of but not really. We spent the same average amount every week. If I spend way more than that one week, then I'll make sure to go cheaper the next week. We spend around $70-$80 a week for the two of us, and that's usually 4-5 meals a week.
Where do you shop for food? Do you go to just one place, or do you hop around for sales and bargains? I reguarly go to 2 different places. I go to Sunflower Market for a majority of our produce and meat. They are consistently cheaper for those things. Then I hit up Safeway for regualr grocery stuff - bread, cereal, pasta, canned tomatoes, etc. Sometimes meat if it's a good sale. Then during the summers, to the farmer's market for local produce.
Are a coupon-clipper, or do you just use whatever sale the store gives you through their flyer and/or rewards card? Or do you really not care either way and buy what you want when you need it regardless? I do both. I clip coupons for household stuff (body wash, cleaning stuff, deoderant, etc), and for some of the grocery staples like cereal, bread, etc. Our Safeway regularly also does store coupons in their fliers. And they have a rewards card.
Name brand, generic, a little of both, or it doesn't matter? a little of both. Depends on what I'm buying.
Are you a member of a wholesale club, like BJs or Costco? What do you usually find yourself buying there? Do you think it's worth the money paid for membership? I used to have a Costco membership, but we let it expire. We didn't go that often, and ours is kind of out of the way, so I didn't feel like it was really worth it. Might go back when we have kids or something.
Have you ever considered Peapod (or another delivery service) as an option? Why or why not? If you've used it before, what is your opinion? We have a dairy delivery service, and I LOVE it. We get hormone-free gallon milk (cheaper than organic at the stores), and a half gallon of fresh OJ every week. I also get farm-fresh eggs, butter, etc, when I need it. It's all cheaper than the organic stuff at the stores, it local, and fresher. I'll never go back to buying dairy in the stores!
How do you feel about food shopping? Love it? Don't mind it? Loathe it with a passion? It's okay. I don't hate it or love it.
Who is the primary food-shopper in your household? Do you go solo? Does your husband? Do you make it a couple's thing and go together? Or does it differ every time? Usually me. Sometimes I'll drag Danny with me. It depends on if we have a list or not. I usually make a list, but Danny needs to walk the aisles and see if we need anything off of them. He can't just look at the empty cabinet and figure out what's missing.
How often do you shop for food? Once or twice a month. We usually do one big trip ($200) for the month and probably end up stopping by the store for anything we may have forgotten. Like if I need a specific ingredient that I don't usually use.
When you go food shopping, do you go with or without a list? Are you an all-at-once shopper, or are you more apt to buy things here and there, as needed? See above 2 questions. Usually I make a list and usually we do one big excursion...but there are some exceptions.
Do you have a food budget? Not really. I guess the top is $200 a month, but we usually just get what we need for the month.
Where do you shop for food? Do you go to just one place, or do you hop around for sales and bargains? Usually Wal-mart and our local Shop 'n Save. Walmart has the cheapest prices around here, but we get fuelperks at SnS....so there's a trade off when things at SnS are on sale.
Are a coupon-clipper, or do you just use whatever sale the store gives you through their flyer and/or rewards card? Or do you really not care either way and buy what you want when you need it regardless? I look at the coupons, but rarely use them. I tried once, but it seemed that the savings from the coupons aren't really that great. We use our rewards card at SnS (fuelperks). And if I need something badly enough, I don't care what it costs.
Name brand, generic, a little of both, or it doesn't matter? Both. Certain products I will only buy name brand (JIF peanut butter, Cascade, cereal), but it doesn't bother me to buy generic.
Are you a member of a wholesale club, like BJs or Costco? What do you usually find yourself buying there? Do you think it's worth the money paid for membership? No. The closest wholesale club to us is Sam's Club. I think once we have kids it'll be worth the membership, but just for the 2 of us, who really needs a 40# jug of sour cream???
Have you ever considered Peapod (or another delivery service) as an option? Why or why not? If you've used it before, what is your opinion? Nope. It doesn't bother me to shop and if I had groceries delivered, I'd weigh twice as much as I do now.

Like Rach, how do you feel about food shopping? Love it? Don't mind it? Loathe it with a passion? Honestly, it depends on the store I go to. We tend to do our weekly food shopping @ Market Basket (low prices) and I come close to having a panic attack each time. If I need to just pick up a few things, I just go to Stop & Shop and have no issues.
Who is the primary food-shopper in your household? Do you go solo? Does your husband? Do you make it a couple's thing and go together? Or does it differ every time? We tend to go together. DH tends to pay for the food each week (from his solo checking acct) but I go b/c I'm the main cook.
How often do you shop for food? Once a week, unless we forget something
When you go food shopping, do you go with or without a list? Are you an all-at-once shopper, or are you more apt to buy things here and there, as needed? We make a list of what we need in order to make whatever meals for the week + any basics we may have run out of ( dog food, tp, etc)
Do you have a food budget? No but we try to not to spend too much.
Where do you shop for food? Do you go to just one place, or do you hop around for sales and bargains? Mostly Market Basket. Sometimes Stop & Shop if we only need a few items (so we don't have to deal with the other MB shoppers). I also get some things at BJ's, but not all that often.
Are a coupon-clipper, or do you just use whatever sale the store gives you through their flyer and/or rewards card? Or do you really not care either way and buy what you want when you need it regardless? Back when we got the Sunday paper, I'd use the coupons. We no longer get it ( not worth it since we read everything online) so we just tend to go with the in-store sales/rewards card stuff.
Name brand, generic, a little of both, or it doesn't matter? Mostly generic but there are some items (like American cheese) where I refuse to get generic on.
Are you a member of a wholesale club, like BJs or Costco? What do you usually find yourself buying there? Do you think it's worth the money paid for membership? Yes, BJ's. I get a discounted membership through my company so I thought, why not? Right now I'm not sure the cost = any savings since I don't go that often (even though it's right across the street). Once Gabby is here, I have a feeling I will be going more often esp when we run out of diapers/wipes/formula and don't have time to wait for an Amazon Mom delivery.
Have you ever considered Peapod (or another delivery service) as an option? Why or why not? If you've used it before, what is your opinion? I have considered it but haven't ever used it. With S&S being right down the street from our place and Market Basket & BJ's across from my work, it would be the VERY lazy option for me.

Like Rach, how do you feel about food shopping? Love it? Don't mind it? Loathe it with a passion? I dont mind it. I do like shopping at new grocery stores or specialty stores occassionally though. Its fun for me to find new ingredients.
Who is the primary food-shopper in your household? Do you go solo? Does your husband? Do you make it a couple's thing and go together? Or does it differ every time? I usually do big shopping trips alone. I'm kinda pokey and prefer to take my time. Jesse's totally opposite. Taking him with me makes me insane. This is true of all shopping not just for food.
How often do you shop for food? Big trip once a week, usually on Sunday and during a football game if I can time it. Less morons.
When you go food shopping, do you go with or without a list? Are you an all-at-once shopper, or are you more apt to buy things here and there, as needed? I need a list. Its organized by food group. I blame my foods teacher in college for this habit. Before we got together Jesse went to the store everyday for food. He never meal planned or bought more than what he needed for a meal and that makes me INSANE. When I go, I plan for the week, use what's in the pantry, and get everything at once. Sure we need to get random things during the week but going everyday is not for me.
Do you have a food budget? Eh, Kinda. I'm pretty proud when I keep things under $80 for the week. Last week was a good one...I did a week's worth of meals for $50 by using lots of veggies from our garden and across the street, using up things in the freezer and pantry, and keeping things simple. My goal is to get on a budget when I'm on mat. leave.
Where do you shop for food? Do you go to just one place, or do you hop around for sales and bargains? Southern WI has a small chain of huge stores called Woodmans. Maybe they're elsewhere too? Anyway its huge, has awesome selection, buys from local farmers and has great prices. I rarely if ever go anywhere else.
Are a coupon-clipper, or do you just use whatever sale the store gives you through their flyer and/or rewards card? Or do you really not care either way and buy what you want when you need it regardless? I try to buy things on sale if I can but only if I need them. I do have certain brands that I wont buy differently. I really should do coupons.
Name brand, generic, a little of both, or it doesn't matter? Both
Are you a member of a wholesale club, like BJs or Costco? What do you usually find yourself buying there? Do you think it's worth the money paid for membership? We have a Sam's club membership through Jesse's mom but we rarely use it.
Have you ever considered Peapod (or another delivery service) as an option? Why or why not? If you've used it before, what is your opinion? We dont have Peapod in our area but if we did I'd look into it depending on the cost.
- We always go together for our normal or larger trips. If we need one or two little things during the week, one of us will just stop after work.
How often do you shop for food?
- We do a big trip the weekend after pay day, and then a little trip the following (non-payday weekend) for incidentals. We try to buy 2 weeks worth at a time, but that never works. We hit the butcher once every 2 weeks. When you go food shopping, do you go with or without a list? Are you an all-at-once shopper, or are you more apt to buy things here and there, as needed?
- We make a list if there are things we are specifically out of, but not really. We tend to do big trips (grocery store, butcher, walmart) all at once.Do you have a food budget?
- Nah... We pay credit cards and utilities first and then look at what's left and say things like, "oh, we can do $150 between these two places this week."Where do you shop for food? Do you go to just one place, or do you hop around for sales and bargains?
- Butcher for all meat, walmart for paper products, grocery store for whatever's left. Are a coupon-clipper, or do you just use whatever sale the store gives you through their flyer and/or rewards card? Or do you really not care either way and buy what you want when you need it regardless?
- We try to cut coupons, it doesn't always work. We shop at a local grocery store b/c for every $50 you spend you get 10 cents off a gallon of gas at Sheetz.... and it's the only grocery store in town.Name brand, generic, a little of both, or it doesn't matter?
- Little bit of both. We definitely believe in name-brand Wheaties, Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Turkey Hill ice cream. Are you a member of a wholesale club, like BJs or Costco? What do you usually find yourself buying there? Do you think it's worth the money paid for membership?
It would be nice, but we're not a member anywhere.Have you ever considered Peapod (or another delivery service) as an option? Why or why not? If you've used it before, what is your opinion?
Nah - i don't know that they service our rural Central PA area.
