Question about moving

Hi all! I posted below about our inspection, and we found out yesterday that the seller has agreed to fix all of it! Whoo hoo!

Next step is arranging our move. A close date isnt scheduled yet (our realtor wanted to make sure we were good-to-go on the inspection stuff before she did that) but one date that was thrown out there by the buyer of our current home falls on a Wednesday. If we end up closing and moving mid-week, we will not be able to use the muscles of our friends and family. So, Ive been researching our options. Ive looked at a few moving companies and that route seems very appealing. However, I have also looked into getting a PODS or something similar, or even a UHaul truck here for a few days prior to close, and load it up over the course of a few days. Then, once we are officially closed, move it to the new home. However, this would be less expensive, but would be one big hassle moving ourselves. Has anyone used any of these methods? (UHaul truck, PODS, move yourself with friends/family, hire movers, etc) Opinions? Any other suggestions?

Re: Question about moving

  • I'm about to move for the 5th time in 17 years... all with movers. I won't go back to moving without movers if I don't have to. They're better at it, I don't have to sacrifice my own body and energy, or that of my friends and family, who love me but certainly wouldn't choose moving me as how they want to spend a day or so.

  • We always move ourselves but so far everyone has moved no further than 1 hour away and we have 6 pickup trucks and 2 trailers between us. We just moved my parents and that was a pain but only bc their stuff had to go so many places bc their house isn't finished being built yet.

  • Is there a reason you have to move out of your current place the exact same day you close on the new one?  If not, there's no reason you can't close on Wednesday and then start the move on the weekend.  In fact, closings are often pushed back several hours or even a day or two if there are last-minute paperwork issues.  So, it may be to your advantage to build in a couple-day buffer before the move takes place, and in fact could give you a day or two to do any cleanings or adjustments to the new home before you fill it with all your stuff.
  • If you close on a Wednesday, you can still move on any  weekend after that.  Use the interim days to clean, put shelf paper in the cabinets etc. and haul some small stuff.  We haul the small stuff and hired movers for the big stuff.

  • We used a UHaul - I will never do it again.

We had a cash buyer, so we had to close on our new home the following day.  So, we loaded up the UHauls on Wednesday, drove two hours to our new home on Thursday afternoon, and unloaded the UHauls Friday.  We were able to get some help loading Wednesday night, and unloading Friday night, but DH and I basically unloaded/loaded one of the 26' trucks on our own.

While we didn't have any major damages, we did notice some of our things got scuffed up during the move, and we were very careful.  While it was cheaper to rent the trucks, it was not at all worth it.  We'll pay someone to move us from this point forward.

ok now Im confused...if we clmose on our current house on a Wednesday, we have 24 hours to be out. How would we be able to do the actual move to the new house the following weekend? And is it possible to close on our new house a few days sooner than our current house when we plan to use profit from our current home sale as downpayment on the new house? I hope that makes sense because Im really not getting it. haha (and sorry for the typos, Im using my phone to reply and its on crack)

You didn't say in your OP that you were doing a domino close (closing on your current house to fund another).  That does complicate things.

I'd ask the people buying your house when they want to close.  If it doesn't matter to them, either push closing to Thursday (so you'd have until Friday to be out) or ask them about renting back from them for a couple days so that you can move on the weekend.  It can be a pretty straightforward arrangement, you basically draw up a rental agreement and pay them pro-rated rent for the amount of days you're there.

  • My brother and sister in law used a POD to move up to Seattle from LA in May or so. They said it was MUCH more cost effective than a Uhaul and very easy. I've also done uhauls, and never had any problem but those are local distances and we did the loading and driving ourselves.
