Can you tell me more about Magic Jack?
I haven't heard of this, and I am very intrigued!

Re: Can you tell me more about Magic Jack?
We have it. We got in, in the US right before we moved to IT.
It's cheap as sin and fairly reliable. My only issue (which isn't really an MJ issue but fwiw) is when our internet craps out (often), it's no good.
Anyway, happy to answer any ?s-- but what you see is what you get in terms of US pricing (I obviously don't use it, an American #, to make local IT calls, for those I just use an IT cell).
I have it and absolutely love it. It's $20ish for one year (unlimited) and $50ish for five years. It gives you a US number that folks can call, which means free calls for your family to you, and you to them (by and large--unless folks don't have a long distance calling plan).
The only bad point is that it isn't portable, as I've got it only through my computer, and not through a mobile device. Apparently 'Magic Talk' does this, but I've never used it.
I'm also curious about this.
I have a Skype "Online number" in my parents' area code that people can use to call me. At home I have a handset that runs the Skype software and connects directly to the WiFi, so I don't have to have the computer running, but when I'm traveling, if I have my iPhone/iPad logged in to Skype, the number will "ring" there as well.
Is Magic Jack similar to that? Does it come with its own hardware?
I found Skype to be less reliable than Magic Jack personally. My sister had Skype in Spain and it was often extremely difficult for us to hear here, which made conversations focused around 'can I hear you' and less about what she'd be up to, etc. So for that reason, I prefer Magic Jack.
It sounds like the Skype on the phone may be similar to Magic Talk, but as I've said, I haven't looked into that.
Magic Jack is also less expensive than was Skype, at least at the time of pricing them out (2009).
