Grocery shopping help

DD has entered the Terrible Twos which had lead to too many grocery shopping trips ending in tears from both of us.  I have tried bringing snack and a drink or even getting some animal crackers while I am at the store but nothing works. She hates sitting in the cart. She would rather walk, but that leads to her running around and me having to chase after her.  I used to be able to shop on Wednesdays when she was at her dad's house.  Since he has moved away I no longer have that luxury.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Re: Grocery shopping help

  • I feel your pain!  I try snacks/various toys/incentives too and it only buys me so much time.  I shoot for a store with a "car/vehicle" cart, which usually helps too.  I do have the luxury of shopping at 9 at night though while my husband stays home with the kids, which is my first choice if I can swing it.  I'd watch her while you weren't grocery shopping :D I know it's hard!

  • You are more than welcome to drop H off here while u shop. I can't image shopping alone, G hates the cart too and snacks don't work. Dh and I usually go together to 'tag team' her (for lack of a better word!) or she stays home with him. I know it's out of the way, but pls feel free to leave her here while u shop!

  • We have had some success with snacks.  Something else that has started working recently is having C help us with the shopping.  He stays in the cart but we ask him to spot his favorite foods that we are buying.  He points to them and says what they are and then we let him hold them in the cart until we find the next item.  Again, this only buys so much time but it does help a little bit.  Our biggest problem is getting him to leave the store if we were lucky enough to get a car cart. :-( That always leads to a total melt down.

  • Ana is the same way. The only thing that works for me is to wear her in her carrier either on my front or on my back. I have to wrestle her into it but once she's in and calmed down, she's fine while I get groceries.

I feel your pain. I can't leave Ana at home with DH either because she'll constantly try every door in the house and when she finds one she can open, she'll run down the driveway after me. Talk about dangerous. ugh.  She's the poster child for perseverance.

I'm also a freak about grocery shopping so I have the grocery list organized according to the aisles at the store I'm shopping. That way I never have to go back for something and I can get in, out, and done as quickly as possible. I also order in my large pantry items from alice.com and have started using amazon ship and save where that makes sense as well to make my grocery list smaller, thus saving time in the store.
