i just remembered you were from charleston (saw your siggy). my h is there right now for work, and i'm headed into hurricane irene tomorrow to visit him for the weekend. any suggestions that i *must* go to? my h has already been there for a week, so he has a list going...but anything that should override his list? we're staying at charleston place hotel downtown.

I used to work right by Charleston Place. You are really close to the outdoor market. It's really touristy now but it's still cool to walk through and see the sweetgrass basket makers at work or find some cheap jewelry or charleston t-shirts, etc. king st is the best if you are looking to go shopping. a lot of the stores are now chains but there are still a decent number of boutiques. many have moved further north than market-calhoun st. the best areas to eat are on upper king (north of calhoun) and east bay st (between market and north of broad st). my favorites are magnolia's, jestine's kitchen, snob, peninsula grill, anson house, sermet's, & fleet landing (more for the view than food). saturday mornings there's a farmer's market in marion square which we went to often. waterfront park & the pier near east bay st & broad is really nice. white point gardens/the battery has beautiful old oak trees. both are great places to grab some shade in the hot, hot south. one of my favorite FREE places to take people is the angel oak on John's Island. it is ~1,400 years old with large branches stretching out everywhere.
the beach is a must in my opinion. i prefer folly beach, but sullivan's island and isle of palms are nice as well. folly beach will probably be crowded with surfer's on the north end due to the good waves produced by irene.
i have a good file at home listing all my favorite stuff in charleston. i'll try to remember to search for that tonight for you.
