How's everyone doing with Irene?

I know there are widespread blackouts... but I just wanted to check in and see if everyone is okay!

Re: How's everyone doing with Irene?

  • Apparently it missed us.  We had some heavy rain earlier in the day, but nothing now.  My parents got much more than they expected though...their town is flooded (they live on a hill, so they are fine) and they were supposed to get much less than us.

  • We are fine here.  It rained all day yesterday and we had some wind, but we never lost power.  Now, it's bright and sunny.  We took a little walk and saw some minor tree bits down, but we will be driving out in about an hour so we may find some bigger limbs.

  • Doing well here. Surprisingly we didn't lose power, but most of my relatives did. The rain ended a while ago so now we are just dealing with some wind. There are news crews all down in Camp Ellis waiting for high tide as it will probably cause some flooding in Camp Ellis. This area loses a house to the ocean almost every year. It's been a few years so it's sadly over due.

  • So we definitely lucked out so far...everything around us is underwater.  My hometown is completely flooded as is the town that I teach in.  The photos and videos are pretty amazing/devastating.  Look at WCAX-TV on facebook...It is so sad...I am going to have so many students and friends who are losing everything.  A good friend from high school just finished building a house 6 months ago and it is currently underwater.  Awful.

  • we made out SO much better than anticipated. we're only about a mile from the bay, so originally we were worried about storm surges and flash flooding. thankfully, the storm took a bit of a turn east. personally, we have NO damage to our home whatsoever, minus some flooding in our crawlspace, which was expected. I won't lie though... the high winds and crazy rain terrified me.

the worst part is having no power. we lost it at about 8PM Saturday night and have not been restored yet. thankfully, we borrowed a generator from my brother to run our fridge and keep our food cold. a few friends have some major damage, so I feel very grateful that having no power is the worst of our problems.
