F/U to Friday's closing...

Long story short, we got the house! AND we managed to move everything Friday night before the hurricane hit... finishing up around 2:30 AM.

But here comes the long version if you're interested...

Bank of america was supposed to have our closing documents to the title company before 3:00. At 2:45 they are still working on them and tell us their closer has to submit it to someone before they can send them over. They thought they had until 4:00 since that was when settlement was scheduled for. The lady from the title company needed to prepare everything at one office before she could meet us at the other office to settle. Since there wasn't time for that-- last minute we had to move settlement to that other office-- and now my agent can't be there because she had Selena Gomez tickets (I'm not kidding).

We get there and the sellers have their agent who seems like a big b*tch and the lady from the title company tells us she still doesn't have documents because bank of america has a computer glitch and can't send them over. She also says since it's getting so close to 5:00 she really doubts they will get funds. This is about when I started crying because all of the options involved us not getting keys until next week and us not moving and of course we didn't have our agent there to fight for us.  (for those who don't know, we need to be out of our apartment, keys handed in Wednesday, and with the hurricane and 12-14 hour work days coming up this week, our only option was to move over the weekend)

Finally the sellers agree that they will give us the keys as long as they aren't responsible for any damage by hurricane Irene. Great! Sure! And then... funds came from bank of america... But no docs to sign. So we were in a holding pattern. No one able to leave... For about four hours. Then boa tells us their IT department is working on it and it will be ready to send in "upwards of three hours." A.k.a. 10 PM.

Meanwhile, our U-HAUL appointment had come and gone and I had to scramble to get my dad to pick it up instead, and two of our friends had been at our apartment's area for about 2 hours waiting to help us move. So everyone was getting frustrated. Finally we all agreed to write up an addendum saying that settlement was final on 8-26, but FI and I would have to go back another day to sign the docs. Everyone agrees. We have keys and are ready to meet our amazing friends. The lady from the title company says that she's not going to tell Bank of America that we're leaving, so they can keep working on it. She was afraid if she didn't that we wouldn't have docs to sign Monday.

As we are pulling out the lady from the title company runs into the parking lot. Docs came! So our lovely friends and my dad now need to wait for the 30 minutes it took us to sign everything and the 40 minutes it took us to get to the apartment.

BUT! After all the madness, we are officially homeowners!

We moved Friday night too, in the dark, with the help of our amazing friends and my parents. We did most of it in one trip of the U-HAUL and the cars and then my mom and I ran back for another small trip of the clothes in the closets and our frames. By 2:00 ~ 2:30 we were done, everyone was tired and soaked with sweat. We took our friends out to the diner nearby, my parents had to go home and then we spent our first night in our new home among the boxes and thousand stinkbugs that came in while we were moving.

-if you made it through the saga, well, you deserve a cookie or something-

  • At least you have an exciting story to remember the event by! What fun would it be if it was "I showed up at 3pm, and everything was ready and I signed my name and I was in and out in 30 min.  It was so quick I got a mani pedi and Starbucks!"

Haha, so true! I am in serious need of a mani/pedi after our rushed move! :P

Thanks ladies! I'm so thrilled. We're 90% unpacked already and it's starting to feel like home :)

  • That must have been stressful! But congrats on your new home and getting through the process in one piece!
