Thank you card etiquette question.

When addressing a thank you card to friends of my father (former co workers), do I say Dear Jack and Jill or Dear Mr and Mrs?

I have known these people since I was little, and when I was young I would call them Mr and Mrs.  But I have noticed that a lot of my dads friends and former co workers correct me and tell me to call them by their 1st names now that I am an adult.

Re: Thank you card etiquette question.

  • I think either way would be fine, particularly when talking about family friends (as opposed to a former teacher for example).

However, if it isn't someone that has asked you to call them by their first name and you aren't sure, I would go with the more formal "Mr and Mrs".  When in doubt, I tend to err on the side of formality as that seems less likely to offend.

  • How did they sign the card when they gave you the gift?  I would address it the same way.
