Ideas for a weekend away in the fall?

I'm trying to plan a long weekend away for sometime in the fall.  Ideally, it would be no longer than a 2 hour drive or train ride.  I'm also looking for some place that is kid friendly.  Any ideas?

  • What are you looking for? We are planning on going to Lewes and Rehobeth Beaches in October. It's so nice and chill. Also very kid friendly.

  • Portland, Maine is wonderful in the fall (1 hr 20min plane ride). Mystic seaport and Newport by train would be nice. Basically I love new England in the fall.
  • Have you ever been to Lancaster? It's not that far away and I remember going as a kid and having lots of fun because of all the farms and the pretzel factory tour-we stopped by there on our way to Hershey-which could also be fun!

    Also, what about Baltimore?

  • is hershey park still open in the fall?  or the poconos would be nice.

i am a huge fan of upstate ny (4 hour drive) or the martinsburg/berkeley springs, wv area (again about 4 hrs) in the fall.  gorgeous scenery and lots of fun family activities.

  • ering - Hershey is actually quite awesome in the fall!  They are open until Christmas at least because I know they have a lightshow that you can drive your car through.  I think that'd be a great fall trip!
  • These are some great ideas.

     Thanks, ladies!

  • Last year, we went to Jim Thorpe just for a day in October, but it was a really cute little town, and I think there would be enough to keep you busy over a weekend. The fall colors were beautiful. The town itself had some cute shops/restaurants. There's a scenic train ride and ghost walking tours that you can do, as well as lots of outdoorsy things like bike riding, hiking, horseback riding. I think it was about a two hour drive, give or take, from our house in South Philly. This year, we're doing a weekend in New Hampshire with my BFF and her husband. The live in Boston, so we are flying up there and then driving a couple hours to the White Mountain area of NH, where we rented a cabin.
  • If you wanted a big city, Boston could be a contender or Washington DC.

Ah the white mountains!! My family and I rented a cabin there 4 years ago..it was amazing! The moose are everywhere! And the scenery is beautiful, i went in the summer, i cannot imagine the fall! Our cabin was on a lake and very secluded, i just loved it. It even had a journal for all visitors to write what they did and the animals they saw...very cute! But do enjoy them! You will have a blast I'm sure!
